can anyone give me a few tips on saving fuel. my 1978 leyland sherpa with 1.8 marina petrol engine and my fuel economy isnt very good even if i drive conservatively, Im going to france in the summer in it and Im worried keeping it fuelled is going to break the bank. What can i do??? Cheers
We had a 2L Ford Transit Campervan with a LPG conversion on it. Over an 1800 mile tour of Scotland, we were getting 14.7mpg on LPG and 17.4mpg on petrol. However with the LPG at less than half the price of the petrol, pound for pound, we were getting 30MPG while on the LPG.
Hi Steve- It goes without saying that the engine needs to be running as sweetly as possible and try to think of any excess weight that need not be carried around ie water and equipment that may not be needed . Also regulary check the tyre pressures to make sure you are not running soft,as long journeys need top recommended psi. If you should have a roof box or rack loaded with gear, ask yourself, is it really wanted. If its hot ,remember driving with the windows open causes drag. It also as to be remembered that the old Serpa is not the most streamlined vehicle. Have a good one and drive at a leisurerly pace, your on holiday and buy your fuel at big hypermarkets. kiev
Also fuel is a bit cheaper in France than it is here (€1.164 = 0.86p) that's according to the "day Tripper" website: Never too sure about them, One minute they're saying that Diesel is cheaper in France and then quoting a place in Aidenkreke(Belguim) that is about €0.20 cheaper
