I've just started using Netwest online banking so I could receive payment for something I sold which is all new to me and I've just had an email saying they are sending me a card reader?
Has anyone else has this and if so do you use it please>
The card reader is very easy to use. If you go to pay a person you have never paid before it will ask you to use the reader to verify the transaction. The reader looks like a small calculator, you put your card in the slot on the top, enter your PIN and it will generate a code for you which you use when asked to confirm the transaction.
A friend of mine has one and has had nothing but trouble with it. I gather on a couple of occasions he got something wrong and his bank account was frozen for ages. They had to send him a new password or something and that took ages so he couldn't access his money. I didn't understand much of what he was telling me (and I don't think he understood it either!) but it was enough to put me off ever wanting to use Natwest.
If you enter your details wrongly three times you will get locked out of your account and will have to wait for a new password, this will happen whether you use a reader or not it isn't a problem specific to a card reader.

My Santander account will call our home phone and ask for the four digit code that the screen displays whenever we try to log on or set up a new payement. Works a treat.

That must have been what my friend did then...he isn't too good at techy stuff
I'm with RBS (same as NatWest?) & have a card reader. It's a piece of cake to use but rarely needed as I usually do transfers of under £1000 which can be done on the phone app without using the reader. If I understand correctly the reader is only for use for internet banking on a PC via the web.
To receive a payment you don't normally need online banking - the sender just needs your name, account number & sort code which are written on something I think old people call a cheque book.

With a card reader you don't need to have your phone handy,the card reader generates the code.
