Just received an email purporting to come from HMRC "important message" asking me to add details including my NI number which I don't know off the top of my head as we are away in the caravan. Does anyone know about this?

Almost certainly a scam of some kind. I definitely wouldn't respond at all as it almost certainly isn't from HMRC, who would surely know your NI number?
One of billions of similar scam texts and emails sent everyday, I get between 10 and 20, 50% of emails received by my employer are quarantined as spam, about 10,000 a day last time I checked the figures!
Just delete it, if HMRC really do need to contact younthey will write. The other option is to have a Government Gateway acvoumt and you can check all your HMRC details, pensions etc etc.
HMRC would have all those details anyway. In the unlikely event it is HMRC trying to confirm something, they will get back in touch with you, don't doubt it!
If the message was addressed Dear Sir/Madam etc. then beware, the likes of official Gov depts will always address to you personally.

99.99% certain it is a spam, a Phishing e-mail to extract personal information from you.
Google HMRC's website, log in and check if you have already provided your NI number. You can then add it yourself if required.

It’s probably not but as soon as the give you a refund they’ll send you another letter saying you haven’t paid enough
