Sahara sand makes for fabulous rich sunsets. But on the windscreen, it’s not as impressive as the ash from the unpronounceable Icelandic volcano. We looked at that under the microscope at work & its colours were stunning.
I used to work not far from a concrete plant and if the wind was in the wrong diretionour cars would be covered with cement dust which doesn't the paint work a lot of good and seem to pit the windscreens until after a few years they needed replacing.
Is that what it was! Our car is covered and as we are away, we haven’t been able to wash it. I kept my eyes open for a roadside hand car wash over the past few days but the only one we passed charged £14! These southern prices are crazy, we get it done for £5 at home.
I'm being idle and waiting for the predicted rain on Sunday! I have wiped some of the reddish-brown dust off onto a tissue to show my grandsons when I see them, though.

Ooh, bring it on... I used to really enjoy Physical Geography. We have a road cutting deeply through Triassic sandstone a few miles away; the pattern of dune formation can be seen clearly, you can even work out windward and leeward directions. I tell them we're driving through ancient deserts... I think they just humour me!
