I remember as a young boy, sitting in a classroom and one of the teachers popped her head through the door to give the news that George V! had just died.

One of those moments that stays in your mind.

I’m glad most of her family got to Balmoral. I’ve had that phone call, many of us have: holding someone’s hand at the end is so important.
I’m glad she had a peaceful end, in a place she loved, hopefully with a view of the hills from the window.

Thank you for over 70 years service.

Her long rest is well earned.

I did meet and speak to the Duke of Edinburgh when I was involved in a visit back in 1997. A fascinating insight into how these things are managed,

He asked me if the crowds had been patient and were behaving themselves. I told him of course and it had been worth the wait.

The next 5-10 years will be interesting to see how the 'Commonwealth' reacts and whether they see if now is the time to say thanks and move on as independent nations.

When her father died, I was a a teenager in an all boys school. We were amazed to have a great disciplinarian male teacher in tears as he told us the King had died.

I can now understand his emotion.
