any one on here running a electric car, what is the true cost now electric keeps rising, ie miles per charge, cost to charge etc, is insurance more or less than their last fossil fuel vehicle, thanks in advance.
Electric vehicle (EV) charging is nearly half the cost per mile compared to filling a family car with petrol (Quote RAC)
It would need to go a long way before electric per mile is more expensive than fossil fuels especially as fossil fuels are going up too. By far - by a very very long way - your cheapest option - and best for the environment - is to keep your current car for another few years if you can.
With electric initial outlay is more and with carbon footprint considerations an electric car needs roughly double the amount of carbon to build as a conventional car (so is less green on day 1). It will ultimately workout cheaper to own overall even though initially more expensive......but you'll need to keep it for many years/miles to see a return on the difference (or get a very good php deal).
I tire/tyre (!!) when people go on about how terrible electric cars are - time and development moves on and soon the range (and range in miles) will be even better, and hopefully the towcar options will be much improved - a dealbreaker for caravan owners at the moment.
As for insurance run your details through comparethemarket for similar cars than run on different fuels and see what comes out.
If you go online type "BBC SLICED BREAD ELECTRIC CARS" - very interesting.
As someone who can only afford cheap cars, electric for us is definitely not an option, although I could easily run one for most of our motoring. I could very easily charge one at home too. The initial cost of a suitable electric car is way beyond our budget, and I strongly suspect that when any electric car is old enough to be affordable for us, its batteries will need replacing. That would also rule it out.
Our plan is to run the diesel car we have for as long as possible. It will probably be our last ever car. When it becomes impossible to repair it will probably mean public transport for us, but then bearing fuel costs in mind we have already taken to using public transport wherever possible anyway, as for us that's free.
Having had a whizz in a Tesla, im impressed by electric cars, but......they have to introduce some kind of fake 'engine' noise in all of them, as they are bloody dangerous as things stand. I nearly got mown down by an e-jag (might have made up its name?) in a bloody car park of all places. Never heard a thing behind me. Technically, it would have been my fault, as i stepped off a kerb without first looking. But i had no reason to look, as there was nothing approaching, going by sound alone. Except there was.
And i say 'in all of them', as they have one over the road that sounds like a sewing machine or low powered lawn-mower. Maybe embarrassing to drive, but at least they wont run anyone down.

That is a very good point Mick. Electric cars must be an absolute nightmare for anyone who is visually impaired. As you say, very dangerous.
The Tesla next door does make a noise, mainly in reverse. We liken it to a milk float.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!

Quote ".......That's why a new EU law called the Regulation on the Sound Level of Motor Vehicles was introduced on 1 July 2019, making it a legal requirement for all new electric cars to make a sound at speeds up to 12.4mph, both when they are going forwards and reversing.17 Feb 2021"....
Suspect the car manufacturers had a few months to introduce the changes to the rules.
You should be able to select the sound for them! Rolls Royce Merlin or a Chieftain tank?
I strongly feel EVs should pay road tax, they use the roads! If you can afford one the tax is not a lot.
You have to pay it for hybrids and get stung for £ 500 a year for 5 years if the list price is over £ 40K
You have already paid a big chunk of VAT.

I seem to recall reading an article where Volvo reckoned that an electric car had to cover approximately 150000 miles before the emissions created in its manufacture and use start to be lower than an ICE vehicle.

Those of us living in the 21st century don't pay Road Tax, we pay Vehicle Excise Duty on a sliding scale based on vehicle emissions. hence some low emission IC engine vehicles being zero rated.
Your Road Tax might be a good idea. Of course, based on your logic caravans would be taxed along with bicycles and horses and pedestrians who cross roads or otherwise stray off the pavement.
The sound electric vehicles make could identify the manufacturer. Here are my suggestions:
BMW The bass tuba of an oompah band
Range Rover A braying donkey
Renault A street barrel organ
Jaguar A loud cat purr
Nissan Kodo drumming
------------- Never argue with fools........They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
Sorry I meant VED not road tax! I suspect that some form of duty will come in once evs are more common. Have to make up for loss of income from VED and fuel taxes.
I like your suggestions for sound affects! American cars rebel yell perhaps?

Once a significant number of people have them, the government will impose road tax/VED. At present the number of EV users isn't large enough to make it worthwhile, and they need to get as many people as possible using them. They don't therefore want to impose anything that may discourage people from switching.
Our neighbour has a Toyota hybrid SUV It makes a most peculiar whirring type noise when it's on electric mode. He has just got it as a company car, his wife doesn't like it!
I am surprised evs don't have a beeper for low speed and reverse like some commercial vehicles have when reversing.
I assume the rise in electricity costs will be passed on to ev users in time.

The govt will have to raise revenue for the road infrastructure as the revenue from petrol & diesel (tax on fuel plus excise duty) reduces with each vehicle scrapped. So some sort of charging must come in, I don’t think they’ve worked out how to do it yet. Per mile would reflect wear & tear on tarmac & road congestion etc, but mileage isn’t recorded before the MOT.
Interestingly, with the rising cost of electricity, a bus company up our way was recharging its Electric fleet using diesel generators as it was cheaper.

Defeats the whole purpose of EVs, doesn't it!
