I had a pasta dish loaded with truffle in a creamy sauce while on holiday in Italy in 2006/7 and thought it was OK, nothing special.
However, I have grown to appreciate it more.
Not something I would buy to cook with myself, as I much prefer morels and they are cheaper!
I make a very nice risotto with big field mushrooms, porcini and morel if I may say so.

Very expensive fungus, found by trained dogs with super sense of smell. It’s usually black or white, and presented as shavings over a special meal (often a pasta dish).
Oil is a way of getting the flavour at much less cost. You use it sparingly as a dressing, not for deep frying. And note the best-before date.
