It came as no surprise yesterday afternoon when someone came out of the bungalow just below our house to tell us the old lady had just died. She was 96 and not in the best of health for some time. He was just a family friend who had dropped in to offer comfort to the daughter who had been caring for her.
He then went on to tell us, the plans were already to submit to the council to demolish the bungalow and build 3 new bungalows in the grounds. I suppose the demolition team will arrive Monday!
Don’t hold your breath. Submitting plans is not the same as those plans getting consented. Demolition also can’t happen without consent (if you remember the historic pub that was demolished illegally). The planners will look at any precedents for similar knock-downs & infill building in the area, do the sewers have capacity for 3 extra properties etc. New building (in Scotland) can’t have a gas supply, houses have to be heated by heat pumps & the local electricity grid might be at capacity - that has blocked new housing estates near Edinburgh.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens. Possibly more likely (depends on the area) is a radical extension: double the footprint, go upwards to 2 storeys, inside gutted & modernised, new cladding etc.
Whatever happens, a year of noise & dust & a blocked drive & bonfire smoke when the washing is out (based on our experience).
