Does anyone know what happened? Static traffic on the M25. We managed to cut across to the M4 west lane (complete with caravan) and then an "interesting" route through Langley and to the M25 further north.
Originally a collision involving a car and motorcycle! Police 'investigation' now responsible for the traffic chaos as M25 closed!
I've been forced to use 'lanes' around the M25 in that area when doing dog rescue transport runs and a tight schedule with a 'relay' of other transporters to integrate with, and M25 stationary, thankfully never with caravan in tow! Can get 'interesting' in places!!!!
One of the major flaws with M25, if it becomes blocked, in most places there are no reasonable alternative routes to take!
Had similar experience of finding alternative route to M25 on my way back with caravan from Somerset to WGC last Thurs! M25 rapidly turning into a standstill, with 40 mins delay and increasing, whilst I'm trying to beat storage yard lock down time! Already been held up by best part of an hour on earlier part of journey! Took a bit of a punt down lanes past London Colney, as main roads grinding to rush hour crawl. Vaguely knew the lanes from decades ago, but not entirely sure they were particularly caravan friendly! Got through OK in the end, but NOT roads I'd choose to drag a large caravan down! Oh, don't we all just LOVE the M25! - NO!!!!
It seems that people missed their flights. Very long hold up I think, as the traffic was much lighter than usual on the M25 once we finally got on it. We thought to begin with that was just the normal heavy traffic in that area until we saw the police and fire engine.

I know that area well as don't live far from there. Just a bit further east, just off the A414 near the Essex border. When the M25 is closed off on the northern stretch everyone heads for the A414 and getting through Hertford is a nightmare! There is a "missing" section of the A414 between WGC and Hertford Heath so all the traffic goes through the town.

One of the advantages of our TomTom Satnav as it offers you a choice of alternative routes if the road ahead is blocked.
The trouble is that there are not many alternative routes off the M25, especially around the Heathrow area. You either end up going into central London or miles out of your way on a very convoluted route.

This was a TomTom 'alternative' route, but I know from bitter experience (well not too bitter, I was wise enough to double check BEFORE being stitched up!) that sat navs should NOT be blindly relied upon, especially for caravan towing! My vigilance saved me earlier this year from towing down a near impossible route with 1:5 hills on hairpin bends, deemed suitable for caravans by multiple sat navs (I already knew the road NOT to be suitable!) - I normally always verify by some other method any route a sat nav chooses for a caravan route!
This alternative was on the fly whilst driving, so no opportunity to verify, I vaguely knew the lanes from many years ago and without caravan, but NOT entirely confident they were that caravan friendly, after negotiating them, I'd say they were 'caravan useable' rather than caravan friendly! Big difference between scraping both sides through hedgerows and bouncing over ruts on a single track, rather than a comfortable fit and decent surface!
