I guess you could also incorporate a couple of raised beds into your design using imported soil, to give you a little growing space (quick and easy salad leaves and so forth) without having to wait for the serious weed eradication required on the main plot.
------------- Always edited for sloppy typing - when I spot it!
Congrats on getting your plot. Make sure you take plenty of before and after pics. It's great to look back at them every couple of weeks and see your progress. It will spur you along I know.
After the accident at the weekend I contacted the allotment office at the local council and their ranger came yesterday and strimmed the whole plot and took alot of the weeds away until he was rained off. We are going down later this evening to clear the rest of the stuff.
I don't understand - lots of people say they can't get an allotment but so many are overgrown & not used effectively. some are also too big.
These must be poorly managed by the authorities surely. I offered a good sized plot of land back along for an allotment. No takers. Even offered it to the allotments association. They didn't even reply.
We have about 90 plus people on our waiting list but there are plots not being used. We do all the hard work then we get the darn weed seeds from the empty plots. We offered to self manage.... "oh no we couldn't let you do that, you might not pay the rents"... they need to wake up... nobody is paying the rents now if they are empty
