I may seem a bit odd but I have three bolts which say my head IS screwed on the right way
It has been horrendous up here! My brother is still not home after leaving at 5pm and hubby got home at 8pm after leaving work an hour earlier (they waited for the traffic to go a little, they finished at 4.30pm). I understand the roads are still gridlocked with water having nowhere to go. Plenty cars stranded and last I heard the A1 northbound was flooded with manhole covers being blown off! Where I work in Newcastle we have a bridal shop downstairs. My boss called earlier and said the shop is flooded with sewerage! Not good at all!
I've just seen all the flooding in other parts of the country on the news. The drizzle and mist up here are nothing to complain about in comparison.
The train seems to have got daughter and boyfriend to Newcastle after all. At the last phone call they thought they had found a hotel and were walking there. They had tried a few places earlier but everything seems to be filling up fast. They phoned one hotel which had 30 rooms, but by the time they got there it was full. Lots of stranded passengers.
Glad to hear they made it to Newcastle, it opens up the travel options better from there tomorrow, rail to Carlisle then up via Glasgow, National Express, car hire from Newcastle Airport to Aberdeen Airport or even a flight up (expensive that last one though).
Once they get in the hotel I bet it will put your mind at rest a bit, and maybe the company she is coming back for an interview might postpone it for her.
They made a hotel booking through some website and have been hanging around at the hotel, along with a number of other people, waiting for the booking to come through the system. They've just had it confirmed at last and have gone for something to eat.
Tomorrow they should be able to use their train tickets to get back, one way or another. It looks as though they might be bussed part of the way as the line from Newcastle to Berwick on Tweed isn't going to reopen tomorrow.
Thank you all for all the information and help. There wasn't much we could do from here, apart from transferring money to her account!
The latest news is that the trains will not be running until tomorrow (Sat) and they are not putting busses on to bypass Newcastle to Berwick but all tickets for yesterday and today are also valid tomorrow.
Megabus.com are showing £40 for 2 seats Newcastle to Aberdeen and
National Express are showing £114 for 2 seats or £80 with travel card
Thanks ST1100! We heard that they weren't putting on any buses. They're going to see if they can get a train across to Carlisle and come up that way. Apparently the west coast line is running again. I'll let them know about the buses if they can't get a train. I hope they do get a train as this delay is starting to get expensive. Maybe they'll be entitled to some sort of refund on their tickets.
They're finally home. Thanks everyone for your help.
Lots of people spent the night in the station because they couldn't find accommodation, so they were lucky.
