Although you are probably feeling dissapointed at the moment well done for getting to the interview stage and you should be pleased that you got that far. It does seem strange that you wern't asked anything about EYFS! Good luck for next time.

It will be easier next time.  You will be more confident next time.   Use it as a learning curve.  Interviews are everyones  bug bare.   Hopefully you will be more equiped to deal with those curve balls.

Maybe, unless you did it last time.  Jot down notes, for potential questions.  As you can refer to them.

But my OH doesn't cope with interviews.  When I just asked him.

Build up a personal portfolio  a long with your C.V.  Your degree course in Child Development .     As far as I am aware teacher training does not cover this.  Unlike when my sister did hers.  You can use this next time.

They may have given the job to the person who already working at that school.  As jobs need to be advertised legally.

This is so true....and in my experience is often the case! I personally think it is really unfair...it may well be a case of better the devil you know but where are the new ideas and enthusiasm? In many schools that I have worked with it's who you know and not what you know that has been the deciding factor in who gets the job....makes my blood boil!!!!

So not only am I not good enough for one job, I am not good enough for the other either.

It's not a case of not being good enough, there may have been several candidates who met their criteria, even if you're one of them it's a matter of chance whether you're the one who gets offered the job.  I've had lots of interviews which seemed to go really well but I didn't get the job, it all depends on who else has applied.

It's a bit like picking a meal off a long menu, once you've eliminated the ones you don't want you end up having to pick between several dishes that look equally appetizing in different ways.  You're obviously the dish that you don't order but wish you had when you see it being delivered to the next table.

Thanks for all your kind words and wisdom. I was feeling very down and cross with myself last night. I have rung for feedback and they said they had over 80 applicants and all the candidates were of a high quality that were interviewed and they had to really whittle it down. It was my lack of school experience and lack of SEN experiece that let me down and they said some of my answers were really liked. Now its a case of "ah well never mind, at least I got an interview and I know for next time".  At least I have a job and it is one I like.

Thanks again to you all.x

OH when she was an NQT had two schools ringing her where she had done her teaching practice and another where she had done supply offering jobs. Interview was just a formality and the jobs were advertised.

Don't get disheartened by your experience Steventhehamster. As a retired teacher I have seen the system working as you describe it, it sounds to me that the job was always going to go in-house. It happens all the time, a job is advertised because it has to be to meet employment regs, but there was never a chance of anyone applying from outside the school being sucessful. It's just the same for many teaching jobs.

Use what you have learned, perhaps you could volunteer some spare time to work in a local school, and keep developing your skills/ knowledge base while you are applying for the job you will get if you keep trying.

Good luck to you.
