Bovril can be a liquid and comes in a glass jar too.
I would be inclined to think it was Bovril that was used to make gravy and not Marmite!
However, if I were to use Marmite, I would get the smallest jar, as a little will go a long way, being very salty.
I too would advise adding a teaspoonful at a time to avoid making the gravy too salty.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I added one tea spoon of marmite and the gravy was lovely. i microwaved the sprouts for 5 minutes instead of boiling them for 20 minutes and they were delicious.
