I sold a tent on Ebay, using Royal Mail it could only be sent using Parcelforce at a cost of just over £22 taking it to the Post office, using Parcel2go (citylink) it cost me £12.99 and they collected it from my home.
I also sent a rucksack (small daypack) to Southern Ireland again the Royal Mail quote was £18.99, if it had been one inch narrower it would only have cost £8.99.
Other couriers are more realistic with sizes.
Maybe Royal Mail is ok for small parcels but I have just saved over £70 in a 4 month period using other couriers, I always do a comparison.

It is a fool who has to say something.
I did indeed read your first post about the cost of the handbag and I entirely agree its a crazy price. I was replying to you and responding to some of the other points. I was just trying to point out that if you can keep the packet within the size and weight limits it can cost less. They are restrictive and annoying and its a good thing there is competition.
THANKS BOB 61 for the tip, well HERMES it is, pick up tomorrow from my front door (no walking down town in the rain to the post office ) and 2 printed out labels for the parcel, what a result all for £4-20, OH the Post Office came to £13-20
Bob Bob Bob MyHermes has the worst record for bad service/loosing parcels of all the UK courier companies what braincell in you head thought it would be a good idea to recommend them

Not wishing to be rude but facts first. Right here neither Parcels2go or Interparcel are owned by or own MyHermes.
They are both Courier agents and you can book MyHermes, Interparcel, City Link and any number of couriers through them. Well worth checking facts before posting incorrect information
As someone who has been in 'the game' for nigh on 39 years, there are good companies, and there are bad companies, but when you even it out, they are all about the same.
I am always wary of companies that sub contract a lot of stuff out. Hermes is a classic example. They use individuals to deliver parcels, as well as their own vans, and the service here can be sketchy. There are stories of these people leaving parcels in all sorts of places, and in some cases, not delivering them at all. You also have to ask if the home based courier has the correct goods in transit insurance should anything go wrong.
That said, I have used Hermes, and found them to be ok, if sometimes a little slow, whereas the big boys tend to be quicker, but more expensive, and they use their own vehicles, which will be fully insured.
I have had stuff destroyed beyond belief by Collect+, and would never use them again, whereas the RM tend to be quite good.
I have also used City Link, and found that even if you buy their cheaper service, majority of the time it gets delivered next day, and they are also very good.
If I send anything international, I always use someone like FedEx, or UPS, and the reason is, that they use their own vehicles throughout the journey, ( I used to work for FedEx international some years ago.) so less chance of something going missing when tracked, whereas the RM put it in the hands of the system of the country it's going to once it leaves these shores.
So at the end of the day, you get what you pay for, but what I tend to do if I sell something, is ask the buyer what sort of delivery service they expect/want, and then book and charge accordingly.
And in answer to the above, Wendy is right, as P2G, Interparcel, Parcelmonkey etc, are agents and not carriers, so because they 'buy' in bulk, are able to pass on the savings to us, the customer, but even there the prices can vary, so use them all to find the best price.
Good luck guys.

------------- Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.

I recently used Interparcel for the cheepest quote. Citylink picked up the tent, corado 6, and it cost £14.
A duffle coat to China with Royal mail cost £11.

The only way I can counter this is that I have sent five packages via Hermes in the last two weeks. All arrived safely and usually within 2/3 days of me dropping them off at a pick up point, even one that went to the Highlands. In future I won't go near the Post Office or Parcel Force as their prices are way OTT.
If you read reviews on any of the couriers you will see lots of complaints...that could be because people like to let off steam and complain but are less likely to write a review if they have had good service.
