I was told that I might have to go on dialysis a few years ago (fortunately hasn't happened yet) so I looked into the possibility of getting it as we travelled around. I came across a place near Aix-en-Provence and Le Mans that would accommodate British kidney patients if enough notice was given. I was determined to carry on caravanning but can see that this may be too far for some. Biggest problems apart from logistics will be the tiredness that affects kidney disease sufferers.Might be best to try UK holidays if you still want to give it a go. Very best of luck to you both. If you do continue come back on here and let everyone know how it goes.
we will only be holidaying in the UK. Reg is tired most of the time and hoping dialysis will make him feel better. Good job we don't know what is round the corner.
Neither of us want to give in so watch this space lol.
As long as you give enough notice, you can book in for haemo dialysis at many hospitals in the UK whilst on holiday. Once the fistula is established and treatment has stabilised, many are willing to take 'tourists. My MIL visited a few.
Once the treatment starts at your 'home' hopital, they can help to organise it for you, although you may be offered some duff time slots as they do the locals and those who still need to attend work first.
Hello Lizzie sorry to hear your OH is going onto dialysis, My husband has been on dialysis for just over a year, first Hemo and now PD. It does change your life but it sounds like you are remaining positive this is a great help and personally I have banned the word cant from our vocabulary.
Hemo is different and as others have said you can book appointments at Renal Units within the area you are staying, It will, as with PD, just takes a little planning. We have fantastic support from our PD nurses and I am sure you will get the same from your Renal Unit. Look out for information regarding support groups when you visit the unit? Have you thought of putting your caravan on a seasonal pitch somewhere there is access to a nearby Renal Unit? I wish you both well and hope you can continue to use your caravan.

Hi Lizzie unfortunately my husband has had other problems and has been in and out of hospital for 18 months so it has not been a good time at all for us but I will not let these things beat us.
However we did manage a long weekend away in the caravan last year we took the dialysis machine and fluids etc with us and it worked out very well for us. We did have a holiday booked for August last year and had arranged for Baxters (that is the firm which delivers all the dialysis stuff to us) to deliver the fluids to where we were staying. But had to cancel owing to my husband having to go back into hospital. So there are ways to arrange things and like I said previously its all in the planning. I did mention about a seasonal pitch because that is something I have been looking at for this year. I do tow the caravan but thought it would make things easier to be able to load up the car and just go to the caravan.

we had been looking at all the options, but until he gets settled into his treatment it is difficult to make any plans. Life is a struggle but we have to keep on making the most of it. Hope things pick up for you.
