on the plus side it is related to rhubarb and if cut off before it gets too woody at about the 30cm level can be added to apple pies etc. there are some knotweed recipes on the internet if you look.

i'm sure you have to report knotweed as its notifiable the government need to know where it has spread.if its on your land you lose a lot of money if you want to sell

There is no need to report knotweed to anyone. This is one of the many myths surrounding many invasive weed species.

I was once told by an 'expert' that i had to remove ragwort by law. You don't.

You don't hve to report it but if you have it on your property and you wan't to sell you would have to declare it to a potential purchaser.

We viewed a house earlier on this year, and I was told that it had Japanese knotweed...the remedial works would have been in excess of £20K so we walked away from the house.

Fair point, Saxo. The previous owner of my house did just that but I worked with the landowner to keep the stuff down and very little spread onto my land. Since he died, absolutely nothing has been done on their side (it's actually growing on the level about 8 - 10 feet below my land but is sending rhyzomes up through cracks in the rock face).
