Yaris older model '52 was fab car and diesel and fuel economy really good (50-60mpg). Service and parts were reasonable.
Jazz another great car (owned for 9 we are 2nd owner) and after 12 years and really good. (50 mpg). I would go for parking sensors for rear. Also go for '55 and above as gearbox bearings had problems which ours did. Everything else has been great and some bits and pieces replaced in last 2 years but nothing major.
Toyota is my preference and have had and on my 4th in 22 years on the road. 2 starlets, a yaris and now a verso!
A friend has a W reg Honda CRV, with over 100K miles on it, still in lovely condition and very reliable.
I owned a 52 reg. Civic diesel for 3 years, it was very roomy ,economical and reliable, good performance too.

We have a 53 plate Jazz that my OH mostly uses. Fantastic car, pots of room, the "magic seats" are amazing, you can apparently fit 3 mountain bikes in the back without removing the wheels (I haven't tried it).
We've had Mercs, Beemers and Audi's but the Jazz beats them all, totally reliable, never failed an MOT, does exactly what it says on the tin.
When my Audi was being repaired (someone drove into it whilst parked), I was loaned a VW Up.
Its a quite (very) small car on the outside but very spacious on the inside. The boot is large and the floor is level with the tailgate opening with a storage area below. I didn't actually clock the MPG but it didn't seem to use much petrol at all.
OH had a Jazz before this car (Citroen Picasso), only because of our growing kids we needed something a bit bigger.
Mistake!! What a shed of a car! So glad she's able to get the PHEV.
As for the Nissan Leaf, there's two people who have horses at our farm and they rave about them.
They've got them both on a lease kind of scheme. OK, you're paying out constantly and don't have a car at the end, but you have NOTHING to worry about during owning...
Tyres, NO tax - zero emmisions, maintenance of any kind, even down to changing a bulb...
And no fuel. It cost (I think) only about £1.70 / £3 depending on your tariff to charge them. For that you get around 160 miles...
Factor all this into 'buying a car', and the costs are huge.
So if you an afford that, have a look...

The Batteries Nissan say will last for 8/10 years But now its possible to buy a battery pack cost £4920 But you would spend much more than that over the same time period on fuel
