The flying is OK...its the method of getting back on the ground that worries me
Its not the fact that some bats carry rabies, it the fact that theoretically it is possible(admittedly very small chance)for it to transfer from them to other mamalian species we havehave.....if say a fox comes across an injured rabid bat on the ground. Once in the fox population it would spread very quickly......still scare the S..t out of me.
And bats are lovely....some of my best friends are bats!

Why is there always something just where I can bang my head on it?
so you are scared that a theoretical bat in a theoretical part of the country could theoretically pass on a disease which it theoretically might not be able to do to a theoretical fox.
and yet that scares you.
yet it doesnt scare you that you have invented that whole scenario in your head and are afraid of it?
I wonder if I had said spiders scare me silly I would have got the same response.....but fear of spiders - rational? or not rational?
And we do have a spider ( the False Widow) in this country that can cause quite bad reactions to its venom....the false widow. And when I come across it, as I do regularly in my garden I treat it very respectfully as I fear what it can do, if it got the chance.....and that is built out of a reasoned calculation of what it theoretically can do if it gets a theoretical chance to theoretically sink its fangs into my flesh
Ooooooh I do like a good arguement!

You would have got the same reaction if you had been scared of spiders. I pick up spiders in my hand & remove them gently from my house. Most of us do not have entomophobia.
To be fair, Trunkles does have a point. Maybe if this OP had been under the heading of "Irrational phobias", we'd have all been listing our own, or those known to us, and we'd be on page 5 by now!
Not sure I have a phobia as such, but of course there are many things I'd prefer not to encounter.
Muckerette has a phobia of "all things large, high and steel"!
Admittedly, she does now try to face and conquer it moreso than in the past. She will now cycle past tower cranes and pylons etc rather than turn around and take a detour... although she does speed up past them, and it takes me 10 minutes to catch her up!
I've showed her videos of the Millau Viaduct... it's on our list, and she will face it some time in the near future, but it's not exactly something she's looking forward to.
She can't stand below and look up at Blackpool tower. I think our future trip to see War of the Worlds on stage is being treated as some form of therapy for her, if I'm honest! LOL!
She also has (a mild?) form of claustrophobia, and in the 31 years we've been together, I've lost count of the number of flights of stairs we've taken together, for her to avoid taking the lift!
although you may class it as irrational, it is a reaction to a pysical object or situation, (the pylon) as is the spider in the garden. there fore they can be classed as an irrational fear, yet quite real for those experiencing them.
had the op said they had a fear of spiders i would of accepted it without question..
had the op said they had a fear of bats i would of accepted it without question..
had the op said they had a fear of foxes i would of accepted it without question..
but to put some of them things into a hypothetical situation and to be scared of a non existent outcome shows dedication to the cause..
but i`v never heard of theoretical fears before.....
And don't forget to look out for the Asian Hornets when you come back from your hols, folks.....we just need to know if they are there and where they are.....National Bee Unit will do the rest.
Asian Hornet APP tells you all you need to know from:

Good point well made, ged!
As far as I know, it is the actual pylon that fills Muckerette with fear... and not the thought of them chasing her down the street all wearing clown masks and carrying inflatable machete's!
