It's amazing how many non-campers have no idea about the laws and rules about travelling. Many see our 'van and say how they would like to travel in one and park up on a roadside with a good view for the night. You can do it in Europe, and probably elsewhere too, but seldom in the UK.
Moreover, the law in England & Wales has recently changed, Introducing a new Criminal Offence.
The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill 2019-21 creates a new offence of “residing on land without consent in or with a vehicle".
Amends the existing police powers associated with unauthorised encampments in the CJPOA to lower the threshold at which they can be used, allow the police to remove unauthorised encampments on (or partly on) highways and prohibit unauthorised encampments moved from a site from returning within twelve months.
Note, this law is not discriminatory, it applies to everyone.

If you are going to live in a van then you have to learn to duck & dive. If you have to think “is it legal to live in a van” then you are not going to live in a van.
Definitely not going to work for me. I like elbow room! Also books, and using my sewing machine, and gardening and all sorts of creature comforts. I'm retired, so technically I could go where I want when I want, budget permitting - but I'd still want to come home and have all my things around me like a big comfort blanket. I'm never going to be a minimalist...
