In the event of a bad accident with a large claim the insurance assessor will plug a laptop into OBD port as a matter of course to ascertain if car has been remapped or not.

It is of course possible to buy a used car without knowing if it has been remapped but as far as insurance is concerned it is the owner’s responsibility to declare if car is remapped & claim will be denied if car is found to be remapped without insurance being told.

So basically then unless you have a serious accident. nobody will ever know. My main concern is that someone can easily buy a car that has been "modified" without ever knowing it. That could lead to them having invalid insurance through no fault of their own. It used to be obvious with old cars, just by opening the bonnet you could tell instantly if something wasn't standard. Now it's virtually impossible. I used to know someone with the same model car as mine, same engine, but mine has the standard spec of 150bhp (as far as I know) and his had been "chipped" to give 220bhp. His engine looked absolutely identical to mine. I know he told the buyer when he sold it that it had been modified, but what if he hadn't? The buyer would have presumably told his insurer in all innocence that the car was unmodified. Where would that leave him insurance-wise?

Colin
