Given that all my qualifications and skill set are IT related I was a bit surprised this morning when one of the jobs suggested for my be a very popular job board was apprentice florist!
It could just be me but I can't see any correlation between the job and my skill set.
David how long have you been looking, Mr's Francais is getting to the point of why bother anymore after, searching for 4 years.
The other day Mrs Francais answered, an advert for staff in the window of a local bakers, the firm has around 10 shops in our local area.
The add simply said, staff required, enquire within.
So Mr's Francais called into the shop, CV in hand, Mrs Francais has done the kind of work before, and has a Hygene Cert from previous food retail jobs that she has held.
The result was, on entering the shop, Mr's Francais was told that they were looking to employ a junior, and that was the end of that.
Whether it is legal or not for the shop Manager to say, what she said, is not the point, the point is, that this is the way things are until some action by government is taken.
I've been looking seriously since July but on and off for the last year or so.
Its a shame people don't read what it says on the CV because it would save phone calls in which they ask stupid questions they should have the answer to if they only read the damn CV.
Its very frustrating. They call you for interview 30 miles away only to take one look realise you are older than they expected and you can tell it isn't going to happen. Again a quick read of the CV should tell them that with 30 years of experience listed the candidate is hardly likely to be a teenager.
You are quite right about younger people being employed rather than those of us over a "certain age" and the reason is money, plain and simple. Under 18s can be employed on zero hours contracts, part time hours as and when the employer wants them, no holiday pay, no sick pay, for £3.72 an hour. Whiile this is the case, those of us with experience looking for reasonable pay and conditions are in for a long wait.
It has always been difficult to find a job once you turned 50 but now it's almost impossible.
When Cameron said he wanted to bring back victorian values, did anyone realise which Victorian values he meant?
Too many people for too few jobs
Poor pay and zero hours
No welfare support for the people out out of jobs because of the poor economy
No wefare support for those too ill to work
Oliver Twist alive and.. not well
The mega rich getting mega richer and the poor getting ever poorer
We now have an explosion of food banks.
Just waiting for the anouncement of the opening of a workhouse.
Because of course, " everyone without a job is feckless and workshy" - you only have to read some of the comments on this forum to 'know' that
Why is it that most people have swallowed the propaganda about "workless people" especially "workless young people" being lazy and wanting to live off benefits?
Most people in work recieve benefits in the forms of tax credits and child tax credits.
So the biggest benefit scroungers are the businesses that employ loads of people but don't pay them enough to live on or give them enough hours.
Tax Credit may help workers make ends meet, but they finance the likes of Tesco, ASDA, McDonalds (name any multinational employer you like) and of course the companies owned and run by those in government.
Meanwhile the MPs get their benefits in the form of (cough cough) expenses, whilstputting out the propaganda that anyone on benefits is a scrounger living the high life.
And worst of all, we common folk swallow the lie and beat each other (and ourselves) up for not being able to find a job
Sorry for the rant, it really gets to me sometimes

Thanks Anne.
Mr's Francais really deserves this lucky break, although it will involve her having to work Boxing Day and New Years Day, but that's to be expected if your working in retail, she doesn't care though just happy to be back in a job.
And for the record she found the job, when searching companies websites, so not through "Universal Job Match" no surprise there then.
I was sent on an interview technique course just before I left on redundancy. They said most jobs are found by being told by current employees that a vacancy is coming up, by checking a businesses/company's website or by ringing the HR section and asking whats available.
Hardly anyone gets a job through the jobcentre!!! My son got his job because a friend already works at the place, the other got his job because he saw it advertised in a paper local to him.
