Congratulations to your son on his achievement, ratcatcher - he must have been very pleased to be able to do that, and felt much healthier for it afterwards. I admire his willpower!
What one person may regard as tosh might be another's lifeline, though. We are all different, and need different things to motivate us. Knowing the right thing to do is easy. All the information is out there. Actually being able to stick to doing it without any support from anyone else is, for some, including me, not so easy. People make a lot of money out of the whole dieting phenomenon, true enough - but it does help some people.

What a load of tosh!
As fin says "eat less move more"
you are what you eat and that includes the amount as well.
when did we become a society that has to pay people to tell us what not to eat?
And before you all go off on one, my 22 year old son lost 6 stone in 8 months just by eating less, cycling and rowing. All his incentive was not to be called a fatty when he was best man at his brother's wedding. That was 6 years ago and he hasn,t put an ounce back on
sorry if this is a bit off post but these "dieticians" wind me up
Totally agree with the eat less move more exactly what i said too.
I used to have to make weight when i was fighting competively. You basically eat a little less and up your training. If you dont make weight you stuff up hours of hard training youve put in if your opponent declines the fight.
The thing is now the marketeers have over complicated it because it makes money for lots of people.
I make a point of running up a steep set of stairs at work everytime i have to go up them.At first it was hardwork but now its easy.Other struggle just walking up them, those people drive me if im honest as i dont want to be like that.
It costs me nothing and anyone can be a member without any membership fees !!
Once you get your head around the fact you only get one body for life and you have to respect it its not hard controlling your weight etc.
Forget all the stuff about fats etc, pasta, potatoes and fruit is low fat but if you eat to much you will put on weight.
Calories in calories out, then fine tune what you eat, fats etc once you have this concept ingrained.
I don't really see myself as a "group"kind of person but I needed to lose a lot of weight (and still have a way to go) before I can have knee replacement surgery, so I joined the local SW class. I have to say it has helped me a lot, I have found the diet itself to be easy to follow if you like to cook and is basically a healthy eating programme. I have lost almost 4 stone (a stone to go now) and honestly don't think I would have had the willpower to do this alone.
Some people can be disciplined enough to count calories and limit their intake alone - others, like me, need a little help and £5 a week for attending my SW class is well worth it.
OH had high cholesterol and a genetic risk of heart problems. Rather than take statins, he first tried to reduce it naturally, which he has done. He goes for a 20-30 min brisk walk twice a day, plus the 2 badminton sessions he has always done. Tweak to the diet and less alcohol. The nurse monitored the results at first, he had to re adjust as it fell too low.
Re the slimming diet. Look at what you eat now, and see if there's any less healthy foods you could live without.
Eg, crisps, cakes, biscuits, fizzy drinks, alcohol. Cut out anything like that you're not fussed about, and that's a help towards your fewer calories. I seldom eat crisps, biscuits, fizzy and fruity drinks. My friend doesn't drink alcohol.
The British heart Foundation recipe book is very good with tasty healthy recipes with everyday foods , as for cholestrol that is the killer that blocks your arterys , and dont let any one tell you Diet and Excercise will lower it because in 95% of cases it will need tablets ,there will always be the exception to the rule ,like the granny whos smoked 40 cigs a day and lived to 100 ,if you smoke ,giving those up will decrease your chance of a heart attack and arterys getting clogged up any more, at least you have had the nod before the heart attack happens so only you can do anything to minimise the risks now , good luck and keep at your Dr if they have not prescribed statins http://giftshop.bhf.org.uk/healthy-living/healthy-living/healthy-eating/product-bhf-everyday-british-recipe-book.html?
i to had high cholesterol, high blood pressure and put on tablets by Dr, i decided to diet but looked up the causes of high cholesterol, decided to cut out saturated fat recommended 20g a day i try to keep under 12g a day but occasionally go to 20g but sometimes go as little as 6/7g in a year i have lost 6 stone don't take tablets anymore even though the DR said i would be on satins for life, i dont do calories/fat/green/red days or anything else just sat fat
to put things into perspective i am not over weight i am 6 foot 5 and weigh 14 stone bmi is 24 and blood pressure is on the low side of normal but most of the weight is around my waist and i have back problems so shedding a bit will help with that.
When i posted this i was a bit low thinking about whay i "couldn't" eat but heres the thing since Christmas i knew my 50th birthday was looming and i decided to make some major lifestyle changes and my diet was one of the things i wanted to change. So in a way it's not a problem going low fat/no fat i love to cook and am pursuing my new found love of meditrainan (sp) food. All i need to do now is get the exercise bit sorted out.
Sure i missed my bacon sandwich on Sunday but there you go and i have discovered i can cook fish - well my wife can and i can do without my collegues hiding my lunch time salad under 6 pork pies but i feel better already probably because i am eating 3 times a day not once or sometimes twice which is what i had been doing for years.
Again thanks for the messages i knew posting on here was a good idea!
John
now off to make fresh pasta!
