I spoke too soon. Shortly after writing the above and while I sat at my computer I felt the muscles all cramp up again...twice as bad as they were before! Been in agony ever since. Dare not use the pillow again in case it's the wrong thing to do.
For years , when I was younger , I suffered terrible pain in my hip/buttock area , used to take lots of pain medication after seeing the doctor , but to no avail . I eventually went to see an osteopath , on the advice of a friend , osteopathy in those days was not a recognised treatment by doctors . The osteopath said I was suffering from a trapped sciatic nerve high up in my spine , about the seventh vertebrae down , seemed odd to me at the time as the pain was in my buttock area and sometimes travelled down to the knee . He spent some time massaging and using a tens machine on the general spinal area , before eventually manipulating the spinal joints , at the end of the session , he gave me some stretching exercises to do and told me what to avoid doing , he suggested that one of the worst was laying on a sofa , resting my head on my arm , thereby crunching the vertebrae and crushing the nerve . Within days I felt better , after my second visit all the pain had gone , after the third visit that was it , he'd done the business , and no drugs at all . That was around thirty years ago , I still carry out the stretching exercises , usually in the shower and watch my posture .
I often find I suffer leg and stomach cramps if I drink too much beer or whisky , drinking plenty of water to rehydrate gets rid of the cramps , and I drink gin and diet tonic now , for medicinal purposes , the quinine in the tonic stops cramps and is often prescribed to stop cramps
all good suggestions! Another good one is high strength Turmeric tablets 10,000 mg from Natures Best online,,,they are amazing for inflamation of all kinds,,, not to be taken if you are warfrin though..high strength magnesium can help loads too--from Holland and Barrett..magnesium oil rubbed on the places that are hurting can help too... I have polymyalgia and have had very sore muscles everywhere at times..all the above help-- and also see an ostepoath or chiropractor..there is often some problems with the discs even when it does not feel like it is that... good luck
The misery of the pain , the times I couldn't work , the lack of sleep ,I was just glad to be rid of it all , being self employed though , I found it hard to believe at the time , that the cost was not tax deductible .

Bob, it won't be the pillow thing that is doing it. What are you sitting on at your computer - a desk chair? I have pressure cushions on mine. And a timer, so I don't sit here too long! Please get some Red Tiger Balm and try it, it knocks cramps dead. And glug some tonic water (make sure it has quinine in it), like someone else said, I always have it in. You can ask the Doc for quinine tablets, but I personally couldn't take them because of the side effects.

Thanks for that. I must admit to sitting for far too long at the computer on a none too comfortable office chair. I do use a cushion but not the pressure type.
My wife glugs tonic water like it's going out of fashion for her leg cramps. I didn't know it would help to solve back problems though. She may well have to share!
Will it work mixed with gin?
The cocodamol the doc put me on made me constipated so I have had to go back to just paracetamol and the Ibuprofen gel. The gel seems to do more good than anything and laying down on my back takes the pain away...so I have been doing a lot of that!
I can testify it works with gin bob , but being diabetic I use the diet tonic , full on gin though , sometimes a small compromise does you good !
With reference to your bad posture at the computer , try using a smaller device whilst laid on your back on the bed , I only have an iphone 4 to be online , and still not finished my lounge off yet , so spend most of my lounging time at home on the bed , no back problems .
I have a tablet (the computer type) lying around somewhere and never used it. I was given it as a pressie but the battery doesn't last too long so it ended up in a drawer. If I got that out and plugged it into the mains I might not need to get out of bed at all...except to get a new bottle of gin
