Been researching sites within a reasonable drive from ferry ports. Direct routes for us are to Dunkirk, Cherbourg, Roscoff, Bilbao and Santander. OH has expressed a wish for private sanitary so that narrows it down a bit. We tried the beach holiday this year but it was just too hot for us.
I think my principle of always starting on a Monday was vindicated again this year. At the beginning of this month we visited a lovely little site, private and not connected to any club and with only 5 pitches. I contacted them about two weeks before and got in straight away. When we arrived on the Monday there was only one other pitch occupied, but it filled up on Friday. When we left on the Tuesday after 8 nights, once again there was only one pitch occupied. Since returning to caravanning in 2013 I have realised that most sites that appear to be fully booked for months ahead are only really fully booked at weekends. Start on a Monday and you can get in anywhere and sometimes with only a few days notice. One reason why I won't even start thinking about next year until at least next March. It is very rare that we don't get our first choice, I think it's only happened a couple of times in the last 12 years. We usually get a good choice of pitches too.
Booked another trip to Fforest Fields in July 2026.
Now that the cat has died, in theory, it should be easier to just pack up and go if the weather is favourable, most likely at sites closer to home such as Salisbury C&CC.
Attending events at Yew Tree Inn in Ross-on-Wye should be doable too.
Time will tell if this is the case.
For the trips planned for 2026, only the French and German sites still to book for the trip in June 2026, and they do not start accepting bookings until early next year.
