Jelboy, Scotrail often operate their Club 55 scheme where over 55s can travel anywhere in Scotland for a fixed fare (currently £19 return). Some restrictions re peak time travel and not on East Coast services. On til March just now.
Not free but may allow you to make a trip or two while waiting for your pass.

With Club55 you can also book your seat and which way you are facing during your journey, I have used it often to Aviemore changing at Perth..Its a long journey if you want to head up the west coast line for us Fifers, you have to travel to Edinburgh then Glasgow which then takes you up the west coast line but for £19 return its worth it..

Took my application and proof of age stuff down to the post office yesterday....So in a fortnight or so...I should be joining the blue rinse brigade on bus trips...
The fact that I am eligible for the pass....Seems more of a milestone to me than my 60th birthday!!!
Was talking to an old friend Whom I have known since our teens a few months ago....and he told me he had his bus pass....As he did...I had a wee video of us playing in my head....Teens/Twenties/Marriage/Kids...and in his case Grand kids and remember thinking to myself..."Where have the years gone" Seems only yesterday I was in my late teens... Doing all the daft things teens do...Now here I am with a bus pass....and a whole lifetime in between......
