Hi Bessie, I work for a car insurance company in business retention so deal with price issues every day, the advice you have had here is good, look at other small cars the Ka is not that cheap to insure and put yourself on the policy and look at multi car policies. However the biggest thing affecting the cost is where you live. I am not saying where you live is a bad area but all Bolton and Blackburn postcodes are very expensive for car insurance, particularly for young drivers, if you got a quote for where I live in Dorset it would cut the price in half. .. I am sorry I can't be more help just thought I'd try to give you s reason for the stupid quotes, it is so hard for kids starting to drive today :( if it makes you feel better if you lived in Bradford snd had a BD3 postcode your quotes would be more than doublewhat you are getting now. Good luck finding a good quote
Sorry if I'm repeating previous advice - haven't read all the posts.
Try Ingenie - our son got a reasonable (well, relatively speaking) with them with the black box fitted. His second year, also with black box was reduced by over 50% when we went to Admiral, also with black box.
Incidentally - I think the black box if fantastic! It really encourages good driving habits. These should be a standard requirement for all new drivers and would help prevent the ridiculous premiums charged particularly to young drivers, on the understanding that the premium would increase where bad habits were recorded.
But the whole of manchester and bolton is'nt great, whats this based on ?? is it traffic conditions accident rates ?? The catagory i'm in is as high as some rough parts of Manchester, yet we live in a nice area with a low crime rate.
My brother lives 3 miles from me in a in a catagory c area yet its a cheaper area to live in, he only moved their as he couldnt afford to live in the town he grew up in
Do you have any suggestions of what cars are cheap to insure ?
Wow that must be why the quotes are cheaper for my son - plus older car - we are in group B but the range is massive - some of the worst areas in our county are also in B and some of the poshest bits of Chester. I think they are being a bit too general tbh.
Hi Tracey35 i've just quoted with Ingenie, they come out at £2526 lump sum or £2755 over 12 months £500 deposit and £226 per month for 10 months with a black box fitted.
Can go down £326 with good driving or up £326 with bad driving you also get an ap to check how your driving is
Oh I remember when I bought this saxo I nearly bought a Ford Ka - cos it was bright yellow (what a woman!) and 07 reg and only £1995 but bits of rust on it already - apparently rust is a problem with them - round the petrol cap and bottom of back window.
Try doing the compare quotes with older cars they must be cheaper for some reason...that insurance postcode page is really incredible - I would have thought they could have been far more specific with more differentiation of the third digit.
The reasons large parts of Lancashire are expensive for insurance is partly due to crime and uninsured drivers but a large part of it is you have some of the busiest roads in the country. I moved from a bad part of Bournemouth to a nice one and my insurance went up £70 could not work out why until I realised the set of double roundabouts 200 yards away are an accident blackspot.... things like accident rates have a huge impact I had a look at rates for varying cars for cost differential to insure, i based this on 2006 model cars as not sure of how old you are looking at.
As expected the best advice I can give is avoid french and korean cars like kia hyundai etc. The Ford ka is not too bad but a 5door fiesta would rate the same and be more practical. Vauxhall corsa and Nissan micra 5 doors are both 8-10% cheaper to insure than the fords.
I based all of these on 1.2-1.3l engines 1.0l models no cheaper. These differentials are based on my company rates but will apply to most companies, and with the prices you are getting may save you hundreds even with an 8% saving. Also meant to add that 5 door cars are almost always cheaper than 3 door to insure. Hope this helps
Has your daughter passed her test or not Bessie, I'm a little confused?!
Are you doing a sort of hypothetical quote based on possible cars and whether she has passed her test, or are you doing an actual quote?
Hi Traceyd no she has'nt passed her test yet in fact she's only 17 next month, but she starts a job shortly in Manchester which will be a nightmare to get to, i can take her most days as i also work their but on the odd days that i cant i need to get something in place, so it looks like intensive driving lessons and then get a car.
I'm just trying to work out all the cost the 1st quotes of 4/6k were just stupid, at that price it just isnt worth learning to drive and would make a limo cheaper to get to work, What i did'nt want was to buy a car and say their you go love happy birthday then find out the car was virtually uninsureable
No wonder their are so many uninsured cars on the road

I fully understand where you are coming from. My daughter didn't want driving lessons at 17 but just over a year later she got a job which involves her starting work at 5am, no public transport at that time! So I was getting up at 4.30am to take her to work and she embarked on 2 driving lessons a week and passed first time. We then had problems not only because of the price of quotes but the fact that many insisted on black boxes which had a curfew between 10pm and 6am - no use at all in my daughters circumstances. This is when someone recommended ingenie, she has a black box but absolutely no curfews.
Have you tried Citroen C1? We were told that was one of the cheapest cars to insure - in fact I googled 'cheapest cars to insure' to find out, worth a look.
I wish you luck getting sorted, I'll be there again in September as my son turns 17, he starts a new job on Monday which is 2 buses away, one into town and one back out again. He's planning on saving up for a moped until he passes his test.
------------- May/June - Spring Valley
Aug/Sept - Leekworth

Hi Traceyd the c1 is the only small car i've not checked apart from a micra (she does'nt like them) i must of spent about 3 hours checking every small car in the autotrader this afternoon, The punto and polo comes out quite cheap, hope your son enjoys his job and good luck with your next car search
Don't forget to factor the cost of driving lessons in to how much you need t save, my son passed relatively quickly, his birthday was 13th March, he passed on 4th June. Cost £24 per hour, he had 30 hours (£720) (we live three quarters of an hour drive from the test town so that put it up a lot compared to if you've a test centre close by) It took him 3 attempts to pass the theory he was 1 mark off the first 2 times, they're £31 a go then the actual driving test is another £62. It all adds to the eyewatering cost!
Hi Kate i've got the lessons sorted, £390 for 24 hrs tution i supose thats one advantage of living near a large city. The test will be paid by my daughter the lessons are for her birthday off all the family.
Hopefully it wont cost £720 but you never know.
Just noticed you have a camplet, i have to say i saw one in a shop in manchester and was blown away with how easy it was to set up and quality, what a brilliant piece of kit
