I had a mobility car for a couple of years when my 10 year old son was in a wheel chair for 14 months then while he recovered.Absolute godsend but the times ignorant twats parked in disabled bays lead to two fairly heated arguments.
As for extras you pay extra on your original deposit, some makes might have good offers on,just depends whats about at the time.
So there i was healthy thankfully with a mobilty car so yes it does happen.
Obviously my son has improved but still has to wear splints but i dont claim for him anymore.he is well enough most of the time although next week im up to the Hospital once again and he will be in plaster for 2 months before another op.He is a real fighter.
My wife has a mobility car and usesa boot scooter. If there are no disabled bays near the shops that is not a problem as can use the scooter. The big problem there is unless I can find a bay on the end of the lineshe has dificulty getting out of the car with such a small gap.Like some has also said I have to get the car out for he rsome people do get annoyed.
Regarding the mobility scheme
you can have what you want and spec. You just have to pay more deposit to make up the difference .That includes some automatics.
My information is a few years out of date - different job now - but Motability Operations are the car leasing company..
Alongside this is Motability, the charity, who run the whole thing and include a grants department who are able to provide grants to meet needs.
So if you need, for disability or family size reasons, a large automatic or large wheelchair accessible vehicle then you can used to be able to apply for a grant to help with this.
Unfortunately, for those reading this forum, grants weren't available for larger vehicles to support hobbies.
Many people are now buying their cars on HP instead of leasing them from Motability as after 3 years at least you get something back for your investment. The instalments may be lower depending on the car and the difference can be used for servicing etc.

I don't know the ins and outs of the system & was wondering how it worked.
I bought an ex-mobility scheme vehicle(Nissan Note)and went to DVLA to change tax over.
What I don't understand is why all the mobility vehicles have all the expensive extra options. My car is fully loaded - upgraded paintwork, driving lights, tinted windows, top of the range music/sat nav system, alloy wheels etc.
Do you pay towards the extras or is it all paid for by the scheme?
I do understand that some of the car models with larger engines etc. come with some of it as standard but in the case of my car most of it was extra.
Me too! I have just bought one with all the toys, ex motability, this week. Can't believe how lovely it is, low mileage and almost unmarked.
From what a dealer told me, motability get a better deal buying cars that are not so popular from the manufacturer, so if a high spec car is stuck in the compound simply because it is in vivid pea green with cream upholstry seats for example, they will sell it to the charity for around the same price as a basic model would cost, thats why colour choice is often more limited with a motability choice car than it is with buying privately.
There is also the option to pay for an upgraded spec as part of the initial deposit, but some of these prices run into a few thousand pounds, and you dont get any of your money back with any of those either.

must be different rules in different councils then???
As m-I-l isn't effected by it. She's got extra bedrooms and no extra bedroom tax?
She won't be affected if she's over pension age - pensioners are exempt (despite being the biggest group of under-occupiers).
And it only applies to those on housing benefit. If she has private pensions, more than £16k in savings or is still working and earning enough to pay her rent, she won't be affected.
