We live near a big stream/small river and have a long hedge boundary where there seem to be lots of rats. About 6 years ago, we had a big problem with rats, sometimes seeing up to 6 at the same time in the garden. We had three elderly cats that weren't interested in chasing them. We tried poison from the garden centre but without much success. We got the council pest control officer in (no charge) and the poison he had did the trick. He told us not to put out food for birds on the ground or in a feeder that can spill food. We had to call him about twice a year for three years or so. A couple of years ago, the last of our cats died and other local cats started to come in the garden. Since then, we haven't needed the pest control officer. No sign of rats, the local cats have them well under control. Fingers crossed!
