I tried to help me ol mate Mucker out, but this is the best I could find on Derby.
It is widely reported that the phrase originates from the town of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England. There, since as early as the 12th century, two teams from opposite ends of the town play a rough and tumble football/rugby type of game called the Royal Shrovetide Football Match. The match is between the 'uppers' and the 'downers' - townspeople from opposite sides of the river that runs through the town. The object of the game is to get a painted leather ball into the opposition's goal by fair means or foul

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it
Social media is like any other arena of human communication. It can be trivial, informative, annoying and even dangerous on occasion. All human life is there, writ large.
It's rapid expansion and far reach is what makes it such a phenomenon. It's so difficult to "police" and laws and law enforcement agencies seem to endlessly lag behind. So it's up to all of us to make intelligent informed choices and educate our children to do so too for safety's sake.
I use FB as a way to keep in touch with friends around the globe, as well as former students. I use it for local info like gigs, closed roads etc. I use Twitter for professional reasons, following and posting on matters that relate to work. My partner is disabled and mainly housebound. Social media is an important link to people for him, and we have a closed FB page as our "telephone tree" for emergencies.
I exercise great care in what I put out there, because I value my privacy and my safety ( I previously worked in social work and social workers get stalked, hounded and attacked by people with grudges).
If you don't get, or don't like it, that is fine, you don't have to use it. But please don't make sweeping generalisations about those of us who do.
With a username like 'Defender' I am guessing you drive one, and probably have an interest in them? You would be surprised by the huge number of different Land Rover groups on facebook. All are social media. Some offer advice for repairs etc, overland trips, meetings, and some just have photographs - but since they have members from all over the world, some of these photos can be in stunning scenery. I certainly don't use FB for selfies and stuff, but do use it for my many and varied interests.
Take a look - you might be missing out......
