I have had hundreds of them, especially towards the end of last year from August onwards. No point in blocking the numbers either as next time they call it will be from a very similar number with the last two digits changed.
Definitely won't be taking any calls made to the landline now that my mum has passed away, as she was the only person who would ring my landline in the evenings at a certain time.

Quite a few people have my landline number, family, friends, and acquaintances, but their names come up when they call us. Any anonymous numbers don't get through, and any unknown numbers go to answering machine. Our phone won't ring at all between 9pm and 9am (Night Mode) unless it's from a member of the family. We just got so fed up with scam-calls!
If a friend or acquaintance calls when the phone's on Night Mode, it records the caller's name and I ring them back when I'm available.
Just before Xmas, at around 11am everyday for a week, I received a 'number withheld' call on my landline, no idea who it was or what they wanted, I just don't answer anonymous or unknown numbers, they go to answerphone and if they leave a message I'll call them back if legitimate. Of course they didn't leave a message!
If any company/organisation offers to call me back, I point out that unless they show a caller ID/number and/or leave a message, they won't get through to me! .... seems to annoy some of them that I'm not subservient to THEIR whims! My phone, my rules!

Absolutely! I have anonymous caller rejection on my line, so any calls that don't leave a number on caller-display get blocked at the exchange, and I never even know they have called. Anyone I know will know how to contact me. Email is often the best way. Calls that do get through only get answered if they leave me a message.

This is what I did when I suspected the call to my landline is a scam: I picked up the phone and stayed silence. The caller usually hung up.
Those who didn't, only a handful, were wrong numbers made by very elderly ladies.
It is the my phone version of playing stare, if you know what I mean!

It’s only a scam if you fall for it. It’s just a nuisance otherwise.
No idea why they keep trying eg “this is a call from bank security” or the person enquiring politely about the Microsoft on my laptop that needs sorting. No one falls for these, surely.
Since I moved from BT to EE, the phone now shows Nuisance? on the screen.
A friend did get caught by a pop-up that filled their laptop screen, which they couldn’t get rid of (I would have shut down the laptop). Paid £600 to get it removed: held to ransom, in other words.

Would have been cheaper to buy another laptop! What a rip-off! The one I am using now cost me something like £85 at least 8 years ago. It was a reconditioned ex-office machine. I keep it backed up to a separate remote hard drive so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I lost everything off it. I use a very good anti-virus on it anyway, not one of the well known ones, but one recommended to me by someone I used to know that was an IT specialist.

People do fall for them unfortunately, that's why they keep trying! They are very good at what they do, and it would be very easy to make a mistake, especially if you get flustered.
On our phone, the automated calls can not get through because if the caller’s number is not in our phone book it is necessary to dial an extra digit.
If it is a person at the other end and I have answered I ask them to keep talking, which they are eager to do. After a few moments of this, I stop them and advise that the call is now linked to a program on my computer which is tracing the source of the call. It is amazing how quickly the caller cuts off.
If it's not in my contacts I don't answer, then Google the number and invariably block it. One of them wants you to say yes as confirmation, then that word activates the scam. Instead say "that is correct" or a similar phrase.

The situation has got so bad now that we never answer unknown numbers either, but I always check them out on "who called me". I have had 3 such calls already today. Recently the scammers seem to have resorted to mobiles rather than landline numbers and these rarely check out. It now seems pointless blocking numbers as the scammers seem to have access to an unlimited number of lines, so they don't use the same number twice. They have obviously got wise to people blocking them. All of this has rendered the phone virtually useless as a means of communication, and many of my friends now say that the quickest was to reach my is by writing me a letter.
Actually email is probably the quickest as I check them at least once a day and often more.
