I am a foster carer for a two and a half year old child, he is to go in to hospital next week to have 12 teeth removed poor soul. I am looking forward to a time when he is not screaming in pain when I am brushing his teeth or having to fill him full of pain killers on a regular basis. However I am not sure what to expect at the hospital (general anasthetic) or what the recovery will be like for him, Does anyone have any experience of this or any tips to make it a bit easier for him, and me?
Poor lad. But kids do bounce back quicker.
And its only milk teeth too thank goodness.
No.2 son fell on his face and pushed his only two front teeth back in. Doctor at hospital popped them back out again from a badly swollen face, and all son was worried about was he couldn't suck his milk from his bottle and his dummy didn't fit.
Procedure takes 10 minutes start to finish usually.
The recovery is around 5 minutes awake and half an hour fully awake

diet needs watching after to prevent further problems drinks and foods and should use cup for drinks.
When I was very young I had 14 teeth removed under gas. My mother had to wheel me home from the dentist in a push chair and I was left to get on with it. It left me scarred for life as far as dentists are concerned.
My sympathies with this child. No doubt He will fare better that I but I sincerely hope he recovers painlessly.
Just dont give him any medication beforehand unless advised by the ward doctors as this may delay his treatment. they normally just give them a whiff of gas to start with and administer any IV drugs after hes fallen asleep in the pre-op room. he may be abit drowsey for around 12hrs afterwards, even if he looks awake, and you will need to watch things like he doesnt fall off the sofa, or down a couple of steps that he would normally manage fine.
They will provide you with full after-care instructions on the ward, and he should be back to normal foodwise within a week of having this done, in the meanwhile, soft foods and cool drinks should help him heal up quickly.

My son is having 6 milk teeth extracted, only because his adult teeth are growing in the wrong direction. This will encourage the teeth to grow in the correct direction. Will be having a brace.
They informed me, that it would be done in two sessions. The reason is; that they would have to inject different parts of the mouth. My son is having a local, at the dentist.
12 teeth is alot, at the same time, poor little thing. He will be pain free, eventually. Good luck to both of you.
