Of course don't forget the HGV driver who should be the knights of the road but are ALWAYS involved in serious pile-ups! It was reckoned recently that one third of HGV's are out of their hours
you want to see the HGV driving in spain..then you'll know how good the british HGV drivers are. i feel safe with our truck drivers they are the best..i feel safe on our Mway's but there are more idiots on it than ever...THEY SOULD START WITH A 6 POINT FINE FOR STAYING IN THE MIDDLE LANE WHEN THE FIRST LANE IS FREE.........

I'm not so bad as the OP, but I can't relax when we are on a motorway and if I have to close my eyes and doze I feel this sense of panic. I feel that we are hurtling towards danger and that, like the OP, I need to keep my eyes open to avert it! I'm glad its not just me!
Yes, that's it...you are just inches away from high speeding metal, & whilst I trust Russ, it's everyone else who scares me lol.
I have tried sitting in the back, but it hasn't helped. And there is no chance of doing that when we go camping
I hope the tabs help, & can then just take them before a trip, don't fancy being *medicated* permanantly, got my wine for that he he!!
Good luck with it, Russandjax. I found making myself/forcing myself! look at the scenery every 10 mins or so when not driving helped a lot as well. Good not to be focussing on the white lines all the time.
Also remember that, although you only think you are inches away from high speeding metal (you are at a reasonable distance away actually), that vehicle in front is also going forwards, so everybody has their own place and their own piece of tarmac and everybody is going forwards. It just might help to alter your perception of the situation, it did for me.
Also remembering all the driving trips that didn't go wrong and focussing on the fact that you are still here, nothing happened, nobody died.
HAVE YOU TRIED BACH,S RESCUE REMEDY. ITS MADE FOR PANIC ATTACKS AND ITS EASY TO TAKE. JUST PUT A FEW DROPS ON THE TONGUE WITH THE DROPPER PROVIDED. YOU CAN GET IT HEALTH FOOD SHOPS IT DOES WORK FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE AND ITS BEEN GOING FOR DONKEYS YEARS. GOOD LUCK !
Nothing to add, plenty of advise already been given but ... I don't know, a big hug. Irrational as it is, it's real none the less.
I'm the same with flying. I don't like heights (which is easy to avoid) but flying tends to involve lots of space between me and the ground and well *shrugs* I hate it.
Once I'm up, I'm ok. It's the going up. Hope you find a way to deal with your fear and maybe knowing that no one thinks that you're silly will help.
If that doesn't happen then start taking the scenic routes everywhere. Slower yes but what price peace of mind?
