We do use mainly CC sites in UK, so we have purchased some CC wi-fi time to use when necessary. If you purchase the higher amounts (e.g. 100 hours for £40) it works out quite reasonably, and the time is valid for 12 months.
We found we can get a 3Gb pre-loaded 3 SIM on Amazon for about £11, valid for 3 months from first use, so for a long UK tour, a combination of these would work well.
We use our dongle in a Zoom 3g wireless N travel router, so we can both use our laptops at the same time if we want. We had this before 3 introduced their mi-fi.
