When I was a manager for a small supermarket chain I would get 2-300 applications for maybe 2 part time jobs. Most of those would go straight in the bin frankly. I certainly wouldn't have time to reply to them as just interviews took up time I didn't have.
Generally I'd tell people if they haven't heard in a week to consider themselves unsuccessful.
Should be easier now though with most people having email addresses as you could mass mail.

Hi really interested in your reply, my son is doing the two year uniform services course at college, just started, he also did 14months of fire cadet training, we have asked but could you tell me the best time for him to apply for the fire service as we would hate to miss an early oppotunity
I don't think it matters how many applications these companies get, it's just common decency to have the manners to send out a standard letter telling the applicant they are unsuccessful. They are happy to send out mailshots to thousands of potential customers, many of whom will simply bin the junk mail on receipt. No worries about the time spent filling envelopes or paying the cost of a stamp on those!
I know it's heartbreaking to receive a load of applications which are completely hopeless. When I worked in personnel, we had one for the post of liaison officer in the factory which read "Hello, I am (name) I am aplieing for job of factory liasioner. I have had two months of expience of liaisionning in (other company's name) factory and they say I am god. (I presume she meant 'good'!) Pleas tell me when to come for intevew."
This is the letter, word-for-word. I'll never forget it.
No matter, though, we sent her a printed letter saying simply "Thank you for your interest in our company, but unfortunately your application was unsuccessful."
The boss was a very nice man, and wouldn't have had it any other way.

My son took that course but he left at the beginning of the second year because they were doing the same things as he did in the first year. We don't have fire cadets or police cadets here. None of the services are recruiting in Hampshire but we check their websites constantly.
after nearly a year out of work and applying for any job going, my eldest son was very disheartened because of not recieving any response from the companies he had applied to. i find this disgusting when people have taken the time and effort to come to see you a no thankyou letter should be sent as a matter of decency.
fortunately he has found a job with a very good company on a very good wage, he is a vehicle technician/mechanic and the interview process was as he described weird!
they showed him a car in the workshop that had a major fuel system fault and said, see if you can figure out whats wrong with it? then left him to it. after 20 minutes he had the car running perfectly and the owner came out and asked him how much he wanted an hour and could he start straight away! when he asked the owner did he want to see his references and qualifications he said no i want people who can do, not people who think they can!
sambob, well done to your son in proving he was up to the job!!
I notice some job adverts are saying if you haven't heard within 2 weeks then you have been unsuccessful- that covers not having to reply to everyone who applies.
I have been thinking its time I rejoined the job market but I'm not sure I can face going through all that.

If only more employers were like this.Ive worked with people who are qualified up to the hilt on paper but cant do the job at hand.
Some spend too much time in education getting more qualifications rather than spending some time applying what they have already learnt.
It sounds like your sons employer has encountered this in the past hence the interview style, something to be applauded in this day and age. This style of interview shows straight away who can do the job and who can talk about it.
Many are great at doing interviews and have all the talk but actually doing the job is beyond them in some cases.

This argument has been lost yrs ago. Qualifications are more important than ever they were. Very difficult nowadays to bulls**t your way into a job you know you can do without the paper qualifications.
My wife was unemployed for a period, I dont think she ever received a rejection just from an application.
She did get them if she had got as far as interview, but sometimes not until 6 weeks later, presumably they wait to see if the "successful" applicant actually starts work.
My wife also has the "paperwork" issue.
She is L2 in childcare, but worked for 6 moths doing a L3 job, so can do it, she had started work on her L3 qualification when the Co the was working for closed, and these quals being a vocational thing, you have to be working IN childcare to DO the qualification, catch 22, is every where wants people WITH a level 3, which you CANNOT do without working, stupid, I know, but if there is a way round it, we have not found it, and its not form want of trying.
