We haven't been there for a holiday for many years, but went for a day trip a year or so ago; not sure if this qualifies me to answer or not?
There are two main centres as I recall, Leysdown and Sheerness. Both are perhaps beyond their heyday but our day trip was pleasant enough. There are a lot of holiday chalets/statics on the island, especially at Leysdown that are owner occupied or short-term lets.
Can't recall what the beaches are like, other than Sheerness docks is (one of) the only place in the UK where there is an indigenous colony of scorpions. But don't let that put you off!
The island is quite large and I'm sure that there are lovely walks available. It is (from memory) about 30mins or so from towns such as Rochester and from there, fast direct train links into central London (about 45mins) or, conversely, 30mins from canterbury and the north Kent coast of Whitstable, Herne Bay, Ramsgate, Dover.
There used to be one bridge onto the island but I think that this has been upgraded since we were last there.
It all depends on what you want from a break/holiday really.
There are now two bridges. The older one is now used for trains and the new one for vehicles.
Defender is right about lots of holiday chalets and statics. Most of these are in Leysdown which is probably the most built up area. Not much has changed there in the last 50 years so don't expect to have loads to do as it consists of mainly a handful of arcades.
In my opinion IOS is great for a day trip or two or as a base for North Kent (but then you may as well stay in North Kent) but not enough for a stay longer than a weekend.

If I look out my window I can see it from my house, I've been over there quite a few times but never stayed, its just a little to close for a holiday, it seems nice enough, nice beaches ,not a lot to do there ( do have a fab boot fair) however, you can use it as a base to travel , go to folkestone ,Dover, Canterbury, visit hythe, new Romney, howletts zoo, port lymne zoo , or come and see us in whitstable lol....have an oyster

The Isle of Sheppey, sounds exotic but is anything but. I find it rather dull and uninteresting, Sometimes referred to as "Fantasy Island" or the "Sheep Island" it does boast no less than 3 prisons but they are hardly tourist attractions. Sheerness is the main town with Leysdown the centre of the holiday trade. Loadsa statics but a couple of the larger sites do take tents & tourers etc, these having bars/clubs and all that goes with them. Accessible beaches but I've never been on them tho plenty reviews if you look on the Campsite Search. Would have thought there are more pleasant parts of the County to stay, plenty of choice. Plenty of seagulls as well, noisy b****rs.........Mick

!!! Known locally as Fraggle Rock. Its ummm unique but I can think of better places in Kent. Theres a WW2 supply ship loaded with artillery shells sitting on the sea bed nearby , which is ready to blow at anytime probally taking the Island with it along with part of Southend & some of the Medway towns.. so be carefull LoL.
