Bernie, how does that work if you need specialist intervention? We have to go to a practice in Abbotskerswell for Misty's ongoing eye treatment for instance which constitutes the bulk of our insured treatment costs to date.

The best pet insurance we EVER had for Paddy was through the Caravan Club (underwritten by Axa). £7K per year cover. Claimed a large amount every year due to his arthritis meds, never quibbled, cheque always with us within weeks of the claim. Highly recommended.
Sadly we've not insured him this year, as he's now 12.5 and they wanted.......£764!!!!

Definatly got to agree with Kernow Camper.
If you're in the caravan club their pet insurance is fantastic. You're covered for 7k per yr every year. You pay 1 excess per yr NOT per condition. Guaranteed pay out in 5 working days from receiving the claim and i can verify this as i claim a lot for an ongoing condition. Their customer service is 2nd to none i think you would find it hard to find better.

But is that really good they are getting rid of you by making the price so high at the time when you need your insurance most. I'm not criticising I'm just asking after my own experiences?
When looking for insurance do remember to look at the excess. Some companys charge an excess per claim, plus you have to pay a percentage toward the bill.
My recent experience was that our bill was £2900 total but £252 of that was to my own vet then the rest to the specialist. As my dog had got older they had changed the percentage of the bill we paid to 30% plus £150 excess. But they charged this on each different vets bill not the overall bill even though it was for the same condition. They did then not charge the excess on subsequent visits but we did still have to pay the 30%.
What made it worse was it took 6 months to get the money because the specialist failed to fill out the paperwork until I harassed them. Even so it still took on average 6-8 weeks for the money to arrive in my bank account which if you are paying for a very expensive on going treatment can be very difficult.
Neither vet dealt with any insurer direct and the specialist is one of the big referal centres in the midlands so likely to be used by many people on here.
On the plus side the veterinary treatment was outstanding I wish human doctors would develop the comunication skills of vets.
Like every sort of insurance, it is risk based. A 12.5 year old dog is a big risk, hence the premiums. Not a case of getting rid of but a case of cost versus risk.

Ali
We had expected it too Ali. We spoke to our vet at the time of the renewal, worked out that Paddy's yearly meds cost us around £450 per year and discussed whether we'd ever put him through a major op at his age (and we won't). Both us and our vet decided not to bother with the insurance this year. Whatever Paddy needs, Paddy will get regardless of cost anyway!!

The excess is per yr like i said not per claim. I pay £100 excess which comes off my 1st claim then anything after that i get back all 100% of the money. There is no % of the bill to pay either.
My premiums aren't cheap but then again i own a high risk dog when it comes to inherited conditions and also she's nearly 9 now and also living near London doesn't make premiums exactly cheap. I still probably claim back more than i pay in though as she has a ongoing lifetime illness.
We have just been quoted £424 p.a. for dog insurance for a dog (Labrador)that is not yet two years old............only to discover that they, and it appears, all of the other companies who we have contacted, do not insure dogs if they have been used for 'security'.
Wesley is an ex-explosives search dog, not a 'security' dog in the sense of a guard-dog or attack & restraint type dog, but as searching for explosives is a 'security' matter, companies will not insure him.
Fingers crossed that, like our previous two dogs who were never insured, that we never have to meet such horrendous vet bills
Just a thought as they may be a bit more understanding. How can these brainless idiots be unable to distinguish between a trained security dog and a sniffer dog???
Petplan for me. My dog has arthritis and has been on medication almost since we rescued him 9 years ago. We make an annual claim and receive it all back minus the £50 excess every year without any problems. We complete the form, give to vet to sign and post and usually have cheque within a couple of weeks - I then use this money for his annual boosters/kennel cough/tick treatment and our car service every April with a bit to spare!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
