As DaneR says; type of battery - I believe it is/was NiCad (Nickel Cadmium) batteries that required full discharge/full recharge. otherwise they contracted what was described as "memory loss", and would gradually recharge to lower and lower capacities. NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride-?) don't suffer from this and can be partly used and recharged without (major?) effect, while Lithium Ion - I don't know about these, but I'm sure someone will!

My laptop is 8 yrs old and is used on the mains 99% of the time, the battery is still OK.Its capacity is marginally lower than when new but on the rare occasion I use it on battery power it still lasts nearly as long it originally did.
