Can I remove a hard drive from an external unit and replace it with an internal hard drive?

Simply put, my external hard drive has failed and I was wondering if i could remove the drive from the caddy and put in a new internal hard drive. Im guessing an internal hard drive would be cheaper than an external.

iomega 500gb external from Argos. I took the screws out and it looks just like an internal hard drive inside, so I was wondering if I could replace it with a 1tb drive or wether its just easier/cheaper to buy the whole external kit (needs seperate power supply though)

you can pop a new drive in, but take care with buying this sort of thing on ebay.
personally i get drives from somewhere like microdirect

also, you need to consider if you want any of the software that is pre-installed on it already.

these usb drives are merely a powered box that plugs in to usb port.

also, you are going to need to format a new drive to kick it off, usually quite a simple affair, where as an off the shelf unit is plug and play.

Yes you can External hard drives are usually internals in a caddy. I bought a caddy and put an old hard drive in it no problem.

either way it will need re-formatting as its going on the wii with all my son's wii games on. Its quicker and safer than him keep handling the disks.

Was the old hd a sata or an ide hd as i think the connections will be different ?.

Just make sure you get the right type of drive, either IDE or SATA. If you need help identifying it look at these pictures of the connecting data cables:

TBH...look around and you can probably pick up a full external drive as cheap as an internal drive, and not have the hassle of fitting it.
