My 19 yo son is currently on a good apprenticeship and is likely to be offered a permanent job at the end of it. He is thinking about saving up and going travelling in the future which we are more than happy with. Assuming that his travelling will probably involve America or Australia etc we were wondering what kind of money he may need and where to start planning etc. Has anybody had any experience of this and can offer advice ?
I'm currently saving to go travelling, my fund is currently only £200 up but I only started this week!
It all depends on whether he wants to go on a jolly or to work. If he wants to go on a sort of round the world trip enjoying the hedonistic lifestyle then he'll need a lot. If he wants to go to one or two places and work whilst abroad then he should only really need the price of the air fare and some money for a hostel. You can do it cheaply or expensively. I'm currently planning to go to India so I'm expecting to need at least £1500 for flights and accommodation. Still haven't decided where to go next!
Its a few years ago now 97 to 99 but we traveled for 3 years and it only cost us £ 16,000 . We were cycling mind you . Australia has or had a minamum funds of £3000 and proof of on ward or retun ticket or a sponser who lived there . He could get a 12 month working holiday visa for Australia . Asia is just dirt cheep . From Eastern Europe to Australia we spent a total of around £4000 .
Buy the up to date copys of lonely planet books for the countries he's interested in they have all you need to know . We didnt have the internet so we go all information from LP or the relavent tourist boards and embassys .
