Does anyone know if you can pay for scans, diagnosis privately & then have any treatment on the NHS?
We are having trouble being referred from 1 hospital department to another. The NHS system seems to be in chaos with the consultant trying to refer & administration not allowing him to within the same hospital as husband is an out patient.
We don't have medical insurance but work have suggested that they may be able to help pay for scans etc. but not treatment.
Our GP is very good but is confused as to how the system works in this instance.
My friend went private to have scans done when she was worried about aches and pains after having had breast cancer. She then went back to her NHS oncologist after private one said to go asap.
When I had my eye issue a couple of years ago. Was admitted as emergency to our local eye hospital who then passed me to the ENT once my eye issue was sorted. Passed between the two on and off for a while as it flared up and needed to have the optic nerve checked. Was not an issue at all for me.
Do you mean paying for a scan in a private hospital or an NHS one? To pay privately you will still need a referral from your GP or other health professional, to pay privately and have it done in an NHS hospital is usually 2 to 4 weeks anyway. I would save your cash and insist on being seen NHS. It is harder and harder for initial private patients to get into the NHS unless you are lucky to have the same consultant who you saw privately and transfer you to NHS, as management are against it (unless you get a secretary who will help jiggle the referral to make it look like an NHS one).

Yep it is perfectly possible. We have private health cover with Benenden that covers diagnosis and scans. So I get my GP to refer me to a private consultant, who does the consultation and any tests via our policy. If surgery etc is required I then go on to their NHS waiting list.
You don't get put any further up the list, you just get put on the list as you would do had you seen the Consultant on the NHS.
I paid to go and see a consultant via Bupa after the NHS failed me under another consultant for the same problem, I got an appointment within 3 weeks, My GP sent a letter outlining my problems, and the consultant who also worked at the Local NHS Hospital agreed to transfere me onto his list, It was then about 10 weeks till I got my operation, but he did put it down as being urgent on the booking form due to the amount of time I had been suffering with this problem without the correct treatment under the old consultant, and the way it was making me severely anaemic.
Automatic transfere to the NHS is not guaranteed, some consultants only work in the private sector, others are contracted to not carry out any work under the NHS without the private clinics permission. Its best to ask first before you part with your hard earned cash.

Yes you can. I went to see a consultant privately for shoulder pain, he sent me to get x- rays done immediately. Cost £120 for his consultation and a further £85 for the x- rays. He got the results within 15 mins! Told me I needed an operation so I said I couldn't afford the op privately so he agreed to put me on his NHS list. Within 4 weeks I had an appointment come through.
If I had gone through NHS from beginning It would have taken months.
If you go privately to begin with you save so much waiting....and you get treated much better. It was well worth £205 to have peace of mind and get sorted.
People think nothing of paying hundreds of pounds for Ipads, tablets, phones etc but resent paying for their health. I think part private, part NHS is a brilliant idea for people, like me, who can't afford thousands for the actual operation.
I agree with monty, its a jump on the ladder. Ok, your not bumped up nhs lists for choosing a hybrid private/nhs option, but you are seen quicker initially, so placed against someone who waits for the nhs, you feel like you are jumping the queue, your still in the same place though,
