I have never picked up anyone from Gatwick but was picked up by friends and they always parked in the short term car park. However,nowadays airports offer free parking on their medium or long stay car parks for drop off and pick up. This is a text from Gatwick web site: 'We offer up to one hour free parking in our long stay car parks with a fast and direct bus service running to and from the terminal every 10 minutes'web site
We pick up friends from Manchester.Mart got them to text when they had picked up there baggage as Manchester Airport charges by ten minute blocks.Or if you have a smart phone use the arrivals on the airports web page.
You cannot park at any terminal building except in car parks, which are seriously expensive.
What I normally do is to park 5 mins or so away from the airport and monitor the arrivals page on a smart phone. Once the plane has landed, I text to get the people to call me when they have got their bags. Then I go to the pick up point to get them.
You can stop to pick up and drop off, but cannot park or leave your car unattended.

Well I used the short term car park which seems to be the designated method of doing it. There is no pick up point that I could find so I assume bad to the bone is using the drop off point. Cost for about 45mins stop £6.
I am grateful for the info on Manchester airport and will know what to do in the unlikely event that I ever use it.
I always use the short term car park at Gatwick. I only live 20-30 minutes away, so I check the arrivals online and leave the house when they've in the baggage hall. By the time I get to the airport and park, they're usually just coming out of the baggage hall.
I don't know how much it costs, as whoever I pick up invariably pays!
We had a pre-booked taxi pick us up from Gatwick a few weeks ago. He text me to let him know when we were in baggage and then met us in arrivals. He had parked in the short term car park. He did say that with regular clients he meets then outside the arrivals but it is only for drop offs and pick ups with no waiting around.
Our parents picked us up at a pick up point at gatwick a couple of years ago. They parked somewhere close and we rang them when we were there so it was jump in car and go, however best laid plans, they hit a pothole and got a puncture so we had to change the tyre in the pick up area!
Did it recently , there's a McDonalds by the south terminal , park for 1 hour free , coffee is good , or pull into neighbouring petrol station selling marks' goodies , 30 mins free , wait for call , then back round to free dropoff/pickup point ,,
