Looks like my Scenic has just munched it's turbo, as it's rattling like hell when you accelerate to the point where the boost kicks in. It's got 143k on it, so it's done pretty well when I read of the horror stories regarding this particular Renault engine.
Luckily it hasn't taken the engine with it, as I have caught it in time.
Has anyone else had the same problem, and how much was your bill, or did you just scrap the car?
I know this engine is in many different Renault derived cars, including Nissan and Vauxhall vans, so you would think that after all these years, they would do something about the inherent turbo problem.
Having said that, the 1.5 DCi is much worse for reliability.

143k ain't bad mileage for a turbo, tbh, most cars don't do that sort of mileage in their lives anyway. It also depends on service history of car, oil changes & quality oil of correct spec used. Whether you scrap/repair is down to age of car, turbo replacement has got to be done properly, ie sump removed to clear out sludge & if oilways are blocked it could be beyond econonmic repair anyway if car is old.
Had one of these early on. Used it, abused it, beat it mercilessly and never had a problem in 100k miles. Brilliant car but always main dealer serviced. At 143k I reckon you have done ok.
my Renault is the 1.9dci and just lately it stared to rattle like yours, I took it to my local garage who does all my car maintenance and he found it to be one of the main belt tensioner pulleys bearing needed replacing, the job cost £150. hope it helps
We too thought our turbo had gone on our Renault Scenic 1.9DCI and the Green Flag recovery guy agreed - to our dismay. This was a few years ago now & the car had done about 80k, We were gutted as we were two days away from part exchanging it! However, it turned out to be the air intake valve and cost us £200 to fix. You've done well with yours - we had two Renault Scenics, great family cars. Swapped to a VW Touran (same kind of space/seats). Good luck!

I bought the car 2 1/2 years ago as a one owner car with a full Renault history with it, and 108k on the clock. So in the time of owning it, I have clocked up nearly 35k, most of it trouble free, and it's been a good car.
It's pulled a caravan, race car, been to France, and in the main, never missed a beat and I'm assuming it's the original turbo, so when I read the stories of lower mileage cars blowing their turbo's, I'm quite pleased.
I could drive it into a scrap yard and get around £250 for it, but it's in good condition and I then have to replace it, but I'm loathe to do so, but the cost of the repairs are going to cost what it's worth.
I've located a local turbo re-builder who give a 2 year guarantee on repairs, and I'm guessing their T's and C's will be that a reputable garage must do the re-build, which there is, so I kind of guess it's my safety net if things go Pete Tong, but I have also read of 2nd turbos going as well, with as little as 22 miles from the re-build.
If everything goes ok, then I'll probably keep it another 12 months, so that I can get the benefit of the re-build, and then sell it.

first I knew my turbo had gone on our car was a loss of power and a great plume of smoke out of the exhaust (can't remember if it was white or grey - was midnight on the motorway), anyway managed to get pulled onto hard shoulder and turn engine off, was told I was lucky that I was able to turn engine off as the turbo can keep going till it sucks all the oil out of the engine, cost us about £500 for a brand new one, was a Vauxhall so don't think price will be helpful but I would double check it's what you think it is before forking out loads of money

Renault Scenic, awful car had a 54 plate one from new. Absolutely everything started went wrong after 3 years - turbo, egr, ecu, abs, electronic handbrake, dashboard, wiring, heater wiring connector, arrghh.
Well the garage that does my repairs rung me yesterday to say that he didn't want to tackle the job, so after careful consideration, it looks like it's going to be scrapped.
It's such a shame, as the car is in good condition body wise, and barring the turbo, would be a good car.
I've been quoted £600 cash for a recon, or if I want a bill, it's then plus vat, which for a 12 year old car, isn't worth it.
