It's a twmpath in Wales - well it can be...or is that only a barn dance, dunno never been but would really like to - what a good idea, think I'll have one when I retire, bring it on....
Been to lots of Ceilidhs, and played at them (fiddle)....in Scotland they tend to be a more traditional affair with kilts everywhere. I'd say casual, jeans and simple white shirt and if you want to be geeky wear a leather waistcoat.
PS gave up the fiddle long ago, I sing classical now. Next concert is Brahsm Requiem, then Faure Requiem in May ..its all muisc and all for pleasure

One of my most memorable experiences of a ceilidh on a remote isle where the coal store was beneath the dance floor which was covered in Lux soap flakes. Never dance in bare feet - splinters and less than adroit dancers may result in painful injury. Endeavour to avoid Strip the Willow if late on in the evening when you and your partner may have enjoyed a few too many trips outside to cool off and top up with the buried carry-out! - this can result in serious injury!
Seriously, you're not going to a local ceilidh so follow FionaW's advice. And enjoy!

We once went to a ceilidh at the Duke of Gordon hotel in the Highlands which was part of a coach excursion. My husband is a rather shy man, and was quietly watching the proceedings from the wings of the ballroom, when he was targeted by a very boozed up Scots woman who would not take no for an answer when she asked him to join in the dancing. She then proceeded to hook him around the neck with the handle of her walking stick and shepard him like a lost sheep to join in the dancing!
The entire room thought her antics were hilarious, whilst my husband made a sharp exit from the room at the first opputunity he got, dancing the wheels ontop of a 5 course evening meal was not for him, and he felt very embarraced by the jokes being poked at him by the fellow travelling companions for the rest of the 5 day break.
