I currently have a Fellow P48-C, which is heading towards the bin, as the motor is noisy, it can only do two sheets of paper before it gives over a burning smell with smoke coming out of it, and finaly blue flashes of light can be seen.

So are looking for a replacement shredder recommendations, not interested in a Fellows as this one only lasted about 18 months, my previous shredder (make unknown) lasted 6 years +

My requirements are:

Shred 8 or more sheets at once.
Shred staples/paper clips
Shred credit cards
Operation period 10 mins
Budget £60.00

Thanks

Perhaps you were just unlucky as our fellowes P-58Cs has been going for years and can do 5 sheets at a time. It is noisy though.

Have you oiled it? Shreaders need to be oiled, especially cross cut ones or they will seize up.

That is what I was going to say.

Squirt a line of oil across the full width of a sheet of paper and feed it through the shredder.

My concern is that of the smoking and flashing blue light which would seem to indicate a electrical fault, and with the smoke would be concerned adding oil to the blades.

I don't want to be having a shredder fire

We have had lots of shredders over the years and the only one to prove reliable is a ProAction one from Argos, not that expensive either. If you are doing a lot it will cut out after a couple of fills of the bin but it soon bursts into life again.

It depends whether you are past the point of preventative maintenance. You may have only caused the motor's brushes to arc under the extra load of a seized shredder. In which case oiling the shredder may solve the overload and hence the arcing. If however you have caused damage to the lacquer insulating the winding or damaged the commutator then your only course of action is a new shredder.

Personally, even for the sake of only £30, I'd try oiling it first - taking the appropriate precautions if you are worried it might catch fire.

Amazon shredder

Replaced our shredder recently with an Amazon Basics (link above). Very happy with it so far, easy to empty without bits going everywhere & staples cause no problems.

This post reminded me of the bag of bank statements and other financial information that has been sitting behind my sofa for about a year after a major clear out. It is way too much for me to shred as mine only takes 5 sheets at at time and there must be the equivalent of about 5 or 6 reams of paper.

Googled and found a local firm who deal with business shredding and storage but the chap said they are happy to take domestic shredding and would charge £4 for a carrier bag full. It is £7 for one of their sacks full.

All the other companies I contacted wanted at least £40 for up to 5 sacks but could only collect, so not much good for me.

This firm said I can pop it in any time during office hours and they issue a certificate and conform to all industry standards for dealing with it so sounds like a solution for me.

Well the machine is now defiantly dead as I forgot I left it outside after its small explosion, and now the machine is waterlogged,so will be emptying the shredding box and removing the paper in the rollers and cutting off plug so no one can use the machine, and finally putting it in the bin.

Will be doing some research to make sure that I purchase a reliable machine suitable for my needs.

A good idea, but for me I would want to see my items being shredded in front of me.
