Hi Folks
My daughter wants to be a trainee hairdresser
Do any of you know what the lowdown is re hours, wages, how long it takes to qualify ect
thanks in advance anlo
A few options, work as an apprentice in a salon, and get college release.
Go to college to train and get a placement in a salon for a one or two days a week.
My son went to Vidal Sassoon training school in London for a 3month intensive course (think there are other options), that cost quite a bit, but then with their training and name you have a good chance of a good job, or they retain you in their salons or as a trainer? (that was about 15yrs ago tho.)
Apprentice salary min wage with tips I expect.
But once qualified you can be self employed and hire a chair within a salon, work for yourself, mobile hairdresser, or be employed by a salon.
Trade for life and well worth it the one thing that is constant in life is that hair grows lol
Wages depending on areas i would think, someone who knows better and more up to date info will be along soon
thanks duffs she has been offered a place in a salon with a very good reputation, wage is crap for an apprentice but we knew that.
she will just have to stick in an learn as much as she can.an apprentice wage plus tips wont be to bad
My eldest Grandaughter is looking to start her hairdressers training in early October, shes doing it via a local college with placements in city centre training salons operated by the college. She gets a basic cost of living allowance of around £70 per week, plus a free student travel pass which will cover her travel to and from the college daily, but is only valid on local busses.
Shes almost 17 and has just left school, but the biggest rip off is the list of equipment the college requires her to have which she must fund herself. They demand that she buys this from the college direct, they are very specific regards brands, and will not allow a very similar equivelent to be bought elsewhere for less money. Her mum priced the kit up on a hairdressers supply online shop and was able to buy the lot for about £95, the college are asking for £160, money that they just cannot afford.

that's a total rip off Julia
we will have to wait and see what equipment my daughter will need once she starts
as far I know the apprentice wage is £2.60 per hour plus tips total crap I know but she wants to learn so I will still have to pay her phone contract but because it is a local salon she will be able to walk
Yep equipment is expensive. I believe my son pays about £400ish for his scissors alone, there very small too, not like the long ones you can buy in a supermarket, and makes sure she looks after them and doesn't lose them or get them stolen in college.
