My LEDS flashed on the second attempt so I am assuming the units are encrypted. I don't think it really matters because the signal is being sent via your house wiring and unlike a wireless signal cannot be detected by any outside sources.

I tried to seek advice from Netgear but you have to register the serial numbers of your adapters before you can access their online help and at the moment I can't be bothered - lol.
