I used www.seat61.com and from there a link to the new sleeper service starting 31/3/15 https://www.sleeper.scot/js/#/caledonian/fares

Not sure if the link will work, but I looked for a single ticket travelling London to Glasgow on Thursday 16th July, and the fare starts at £23.90 (seat only) or £58.50 for a berth

If you would like me to check other dates and prices for you, please shout

Caci - thanks for reminding me about the sleeper service! I'm not sure how far they've got with their plans - know dates are arrive Mull 15th July, depart 18th July - but if the sleeper would tie in with their plans one way or other, I'd suggest they went on to Fort William, have a leisurely breakfast in Morrisons next to the rail station and I pick them up at 0900. Tried the link but the broadband is especially slow tonight so wouldn't load - will try tomorrow.

Went on to find out about railcards for overseas visitors and they're £160 person. Depending on how much they're going to use the train as to whether it would be worth it, but will give them the idea.

You can board your sleeper from 19:45 onwards at Inverness, from 22:45 (22:30 Sundays) at Edinburgh and from 22:00 at Glasgow.
No sleeper trains run on Saturday nights.

In fact, with one exception some eight years ago, the last time I was on a train, it was also British Rail!
