Novotel Hammersmith is one of my favourites, you can get some cheap deals if you contact the hotel direct, most of the staff are French which I find quite cute.
Travelodge, Premierinn, Holiday Inn express etc all have rooms at reasonable prices, but you need to book early and not choose a weekend when there is a big event such as Marathon, cup finals etc.
Booking.com will give you filtering of cost options. I work near kings cross during the week and am in a basic, 2 star but clean, servicable hotel next to kings cross for under £80 for a small double. You can search on cost, stars or review.
I have had very few bad experiences using this method.

Took a break like everyone over covid, flogged the caravan and got a campervan!
The cheapest stay we ever had was at the youth hostel at St Pauls, Blackfriars.
We had our own room.It was a while ago but it's still a reasonable price for the basics.
We weren't youths either, we were young pensioners.
premier inn, cant beat it, have stayed numerous locations in london, i love the Tate one though. Last time we stayed it was £89 for a family room for 4, then £20 for breakfast and kids eat for free. They are spotlessly clean and very efficient.
My son attends Imperial College university in South Kensington. They rent out halls of residence in July, August and September. It is ideally placed for the museums and Knightsbridge, close to the underground station and a short walk to the Thames. The rate includes a cooked breakfast and details can be found on the net.
For central London, I favour the hotels of the Imperial Hotels group in WC1 area near Russell Square.
Budget tourist hotels, nothing fancy, in good locations. I know the area well, having gone to college and had a shoe box of a flat there for 17 years.
Tavistock Hotel is the one I would choose, as it is smaller and less busy than the massive Royal International.
Never stayed at the Bedford, President or Imperial, the flagship, therefore, I cannot comment about them.
The County is even cheaper, however, the rooms are not en-suite.
For less than 100 GBP in the WC1, the hotels are bargains IMHO.
They will not be my hotels of choice for the summer though, as I would need a room with air-con, and that would bump up the cost considerably.

Look at Travelodges at Twickenham, Teddington and Kingston upon Thames. We've stayed at all of them for visits to London. You can buy a travel card for around £8 and travel in to London on the train in less than 30 mins and then use on the tubes/buses all day. You also get two for one offers on lots of attractions in London with the travelcard, including bus/river tours, London Zoo, to name a few.
Plus the three locations are all nice places in their own right. Twickenham is my personal favourite, some lovely eateries when you return after your day out in London and it's lovely down on the riverside. All three are a short walk to the train station.
