Has anyone any experience of running a small ironing business from home? I'm still a stay-at-home mum, but I'm needing to earn a bit of cash to cover the increasing costs of my eldest's music tuition!
I used to iron for a few people ,started with the pub family I used to clean for then just word of mouth,i used to charge by the hour but not sure what the going rate would be now.maybe try in your locals first

You would need some sort of insurance in case of accidental damage or items being lost. Also if you take on too much, the council may pick up on you using your premises for business purposes. Not really an issue if you inform them.
Thanks folks. I've been having a look locally and it appears there is already a professional ironing business here in my town. They have their own delivery vans and use equipment that costs thousands! I really can't compete with that.
I think I'll pop a wee advert in various shops here and see what happens. I wouldn't be able to take on too much as I have a chronic health condition (a flare-up and goes away for a while type thing).
It's proving pretty difficult to find something I can do during school hours.
when I did it, people dropped off and picked up theirs as I don't have transport ,also I only had a few regulars ,just enough to give me some pin money .I also had a couple of clothes rails for hanging stuff .I did it when it suited me so I wasn't tied

You are better off getting people to bring the items to you, then collect them afterwards, it saves a lot on the cost of fuel and business insurance on your car. It might also be worth targeting companies where people work full time and would like a laundry service for shirts and corporate wear. We have an Ironing lady locally who works out of a tiny backstreet shop, but also runs a house cleaning business employing several people which was born out of enquiries from laundry customers.
