We have an 11 month female Pug.
We are currently living abroad, we had her spayed in July, I thought this was early, but vet advised me it was fine. I would have waited, but we were visiting the uk for nearly a month, leaving her with a dog sitter. I didn't want to get back to a pregnancy.
Since then she has been ill with urine infection and on antibiotics every month!
I've never had this with a pet, apart from costing us quite a bit of money, we wanted to bring her back to the uk with us next year, I'm now thinking, she can't be on antibiotics for ever, will she end up being put to sleep because of this?
She's had scans and x Ray's, no abnormality. She got no crystals in her bladder. Tried a special urinary diet. Non of it has worked, we are really worried 😢
Hi! Didn't think anyone would remember me! Hope you are well?!
Haven't posted as living so far away we are well out of uk life! Have done a bit of wild camping, I'm not a convert! Lol
I'm just so worried about our little dog, the vets, have no idea why she keeps getting it, we've tried 2 different vets so far 😕
Many dogs after being spayed end up with minor incontinence. It is very common. They have to go onto a liquid called Urilin (Phenylpropanolamine) for the rest of their lives.
This is a syrup administered into their food from a dropper bottle. It sounds expensive at about £14 a bottle and it tells you to replace the bottle every 3 months. However, at just 3 drops a day (one with her morning meal and two with her evening meal) mine lasts about a year and my vet says it is ok to use it for that long.
If your dog's problem is incontinence this may be the reason rather than an infection.
11 months is really young to get a bitch speyed, although if she'd already had a season this may have helped.
The reason to allow at least one season before speying is to avoid incontinence or at leadt reduce the chances.
A young bitches 'lady bits' don't become full sized until she's had at least one season, preferably two.
Of course, here in the UK they prefer to spey at 6 months, and looking at the number of people who haven't a clue what they are doing and willing to risk their bitch for pups and the cash they bring, I can hardly blame them
Has the vet confirmed by testing that this really is infection? If not, it may be worth getting done, to make sure they use the right antibiotic or can discount infection
Hope you get some clarity soon xxx

Hi Yes we went to live in Oman for 3 years, back over Christmas due to a family bereavement 😢 Hoping to come back next year, although hubby will be there until 2017.
Yes she's been tested, definitely infection. She had blood in her wee when it's bad. I've googled and feel angry that the vet said it was fine to Spey her, she was only 24 weeks old!! Looking a photos I think her lady bits haven't developed properly, seen there is an op she could have, but vet having non of it, so far. She's not incontinent, only when she has the infection back. Half way through antibiotics she fine. So worried x
Our rough collie before her spay, got recurring UTI's.....only it turned out that she actually had crystals [struvite] in her urine. This wasn't going to be cured by antibiotics, but a change of diet for about 6 months. She was just under a year old when this happened.
------------- My photos allow you to see what I saw at the time that I took it....No messing.
Does she 'curtsey' very low when weeing? this can be a cause of infection in puppies (and she would still be classed as a puppy for showing - physical immaturity )
As a bitch matures she begins to curtsey a little less close to the ground and the problem is sorted. Of course this can be delayed in neutered bitches.
If you think this is what's happening, maybe use a wet wipe, after she's had a wee. Just a quick clean of her 'bits' may do the trick.

No she doesn't, but I've noticed she doesn't lick/clean herself much. I've tried cleaning her everyday with water and cotton wool, doesn't seem to have had much effect.
When I get back going to see vet about the op for a juvenile vulva. I've been doing lots of googling, looking a pictures, this is definitely what I think it is.
